Need info on water turtles :)

Hi there, I’m thinking of getting a water turtle, but first I need all the information I can get :) A few questions I have are:

1. What do I feed him?
2. How big should the tank be?
3. Do they get sick easily?
4. How do you prevent them from getting sick?

Thanks

it all depends on kind of turtle. and i would think this threw vary carfuly. you will need a LARGE tank for a water turtle and when he gets big you cant just let him go he WILL DIE!!! so i would just make you have space and money to take care of one before you actualy do it.

I saw a few at the pet shop and completely fell in love with them! I am a big animal lover and would never consider letting him go :) I have a lot of birthday and Christmas money saved up and I’ve done a lot of research :) But I don’t want to get one until I’m totally sure I can meet all of its requirements. I don’t know what breed they are yet, I might go to the pet shop tomorrow to find out more about them. I’ll let you know the breed as soon as I can.

denfinitly do that first. the most expensive part about it is the tank and filter. eventually you will need a vary large tank or have to build you own. And filtration for it is going to be killer. lol

The pet shop that I’ve seen the turtles at is pretty small and only sells reptiles, hamsters, guinea pigs, and bunnies. There is only one largeish tank with about 3 baby turtles in it.

Do they like/mind being held?

well i take it as they don’t care much for being held. just looked at and feed. i used to feed mine pretty much everything. NOT ICEBERG LETTUCE!!!!!!!!! NEVER UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES FEED THEN ICE BERG LETTUCE!!! but i feed worms, fish, fruit and pellets. do not do raw meat because that is how salmonella starts. lol but again it depends on what turtle.

A very common ad great water turtle is the red-eared slider. They don’t like to be held, but water turtles are fantastic display animals; one can watch them swim around and interact with their environment for hours on end. As long as you don’t wave your finger in front of them, they won’t bite. Sliders do get kind of big; as adults they require a 55 gallon tank or larger. However, it is more economic and pleasuring to make an outdoor enclosure.

Turtles are pretty much display only animals, also bare in mind that most pet stores only carry Red eared Sliders which are fast growing and as adults will require at an min a 75 Gal tank, I myself raise and breed them and will not even sell them to anyone unless they prove they have a tank that size
