 Opinion on Turtle Problem!

Hello everyone, let me make this short. I don’t know much about turtles and I just got one recently, not by choice though. Anyway I had an argument with my dad about what I should do with it. I know this turtle has been in captivity all it’s life. He suggests I just go to a local lake and dump it. I don’t agree with this, only because I don’t think it will be able to survive on it’s own. The turtle is a bit domesticated, she does have a tendency to bite me though. Her breed is a painted turtle. He says that because it bites it’s not domesticated and I should just let her go. Is this true? And even if she is domesticated will she survive on her own?
