I cannot be trusted at a reptile expo...

she twisted my arm, honest! she’s much stronger than she looks! her name is penelope. isn’t she wonderful?

look at that face!
for now she’s living in a rubbermaid pan, with one of the bug dishes for water and stewies’s old hut. the whole thing fits perfectly under the fluorescent UVB on the cage-top basking spot.

the little plate of lettuce is leaf lettuce straight out of my garden, because i’m kind of totally unprepared. but i called susan; she has a sulcata named ricochet, and she told me what penelope needs to eat, etc.

i really have to stop this, though. i have no more space; the last two vivs have gone up. i told todd (current hanging-out friend), "new rule--jesse is no longer allowed to take money to the reptile expos!"

but she’s so cute! looks like i’d better stop by the tortoise forum once in a while.

always wanted an African Spur Tortoise though they get too large(up to 200lbs & the size of a sewer cover) and will eventually need to be housed outdoors in a warm climate & I live in Northern Ohio & we have this stuff called snow 6 months out of the year....

So I settled on a Red-Foot Tortoise instead and they are pretty cool pets...

Have fun with your mini tank.....

oh, i don’t know... i’ve never worried about weight as long as i can see healthy growth. right now i’d be surprised if she weighs more than an ounce, which would be 28 grams.

I’ve never posted in the tortoise forum before since my husband does most of the care of our our Sulcatta, Ricochet. Mini-tank is an excellent description. We recently had to put hog pen around the compressor of our air conditioner because he knocked it off of it’s concrete slab -- and he’s only around 55 lbs so far.

well, hopefully by the time penelope is that tank-like i’ll have a tougher house. i know i have a few years.
what should i give her for substrate? it says she wants to burrow.

I have a mixture of soil sand and coconut coir in zinders table. He isn’t much of a burrower though he loves hanging out in his fav humid hide. Also can you ask Penelope if she will be zinders girlfriend hahahaha

i’m sure she won’t mind at all, as long as it stays long-distance (she needs her space--i’m pretty sure her name is actually queen penelope).

I can’t believe you made me come ALL THE WAY OVER HERE, Jesse. I mean, honestly. Do you have any idea how much work it is to move over to a different forum? Haven’t you noticed that most of my posts about Kismet are NOT in the Cyclura forum?

LOL

Anyway, since Ricochet is outside and we didn’t have him when he was really little, I don’t know how much help I will be. I can, however, warn you of what to expect in the years to come!

Speedy - a teeny tiny Greek tort :D

My husband is not a reptile guy but he is pretty accepting of whatever I bring home as long as #1 - is isn’t a snake and #2 - it fits in my herp room hahaha I’m trying to convince him a Leopard tort doesn’t get "that" big but he isn’t buying it lol And I live in northern Ontario so it would be indoors most of the year. If we lived in a climate where I could keep large torts outside then he could care less .. so then the obvious solution is WE GOTTA MOVE!!! lmao I would get a sulcata in a heart beat if I lived in a place where it could be cared for properly but alas .. I’ll have to stick to my little Greek tort and look into some hermans, red foot, egyptian sized torts :)

he’s wonderful! milan is right; there is nothing in the world cuter than a baby tortoise eating. i love the little set up you have for him. what substrate do you use? i was thinking, since she’ll live outside when she’s bigger anyway, plain, old dirt would probably do, as long as i bake it to make sure there are no bugs.

I just use a soil and coco-fiber mix :) The soil is good because it hold humidity, the coco dries out FAST.
Baby torts are so so soooo cute! Another one that would be amazing to have is a a star tort. There are 2 available near me for $1200 each, ouch! lol From what I’ve read they are not very hardy and so a little more difficult to keep.

Greeks don’t get very big and a tortoise table will be construced later on but for now this rubber maid tote is plenty big enough for such a tiny tort :) I’ve been able to put hen-and-chick plants in little pots and bury them but for the life of me I can’t keep transplated chunks of dendelion or clover alive .. you know, the most prolific growing weeds on EARTH! LOL Go figure, I can’t get them to grow inside hahaha No matter, after just a few minutes in the ’enclosure’ and they get chomped to pieces anyway lol
