Need help with my American toads

We have two American toads since October 2013 (1 male and 1 female). They have been doing well overall but for the past 3 wks he has been continuously on her back. I know that they do this when mating but for the past week and a half he doesn’t come off her back at all and I am now beginning to worry because he will not even come off of her to eat. He stays clamped on to her. I tried to take him off but he has got such a strong grip and makes a loud noise when I try to separate him from her. He hasn’t eaten and I am concerned. What should I do?

They’re in amplexus. You could try dipping them in water. Might get him off of her.

It’s the toads’ natural instinct -- please just let him hang on there until he’s ready to get off. He’ll be OK I promise.

You see, the reason it takes so long is that the male is waiting for the female to lay her eggs. Suggest that you move them into a tank containing a large, shallow water area so she can lay them.
