Minimum of 6x3x2. 8x4x2 would be ideal.

You can keep it in a tank. It will be hard to keep up humidity. To fix that I used to tape aluminum foil over 3/4 of the screen. It will last you a few months. I would definetly try to start his big cage sooner than later. They grow fast. I have a red who is almost 2 yrs old, in one month he put on 5 in at one point when he was younger. Some people might say no on the glass tank, but if it’s a hatchling you’ll be fine for a little while.

Do you know about how much it would cost to build a cage for it?

Anywhere between 100-200$ depending on what material you use. Building your own is way cheaper than buying one brand new. I have also found great deals on Craigslist too.

You need substrate deep enough for the tegu to bury. Cypress mulch works great that’s what alot of people use,( not all though) pretty much anything that can hold humidity. Hot side needs to be around 90-95f with a basking spot around 110-115f and a cool side around 80-85f. Humidity you want at about 70%. Throw in some hides, a water bowl, and you should be good. No point in using plants they will just destroy them.alot of people use sand and dirt mix for substrate, I don’t use that it’s too messy to me but humidity is important for the tegu.

How do i keep the humidity up? Do i just need to mist the cage a couple of times a day?

Get a humidity gauge. And yes spraying the cage down will help keep it where it needs to be. Now if the top of the substrate is wet and not the bottom that won’t work. My guy never buries so I spray it down really good every 3 days and I also turn the substrate so it’s all damp not the top. I use a big bin as his hide with cypress mulch and Eco earth and that stays moist for about a week. Here is my setup for now. Its an 8x4x4, I’m getting out the military in nov and when I move back home to my new house he will get a bigger one hopefully 10x5x4. You won’t need one that big I have a fairly large red. 4 1/2 ft and 17lbs.
