And I got my red tegu :3 sooo happy, he was the sweetest of the three boys that were left.

Full tail, no missing toes, nice and full. He’s so cute.

Meet Norbert!

 San Antonio Reptile expo today!

Just a few questions:

He has only eaten one large cricket since I brought him home- I’m sure it’ll take a little bit for him to get comfortable and eating how he probably should, but I just wanna make sure that I’m doing everything right.

The guy that I got him from at the show said that he fed all of them a bunch of super worms before the show, he is very plump. It’s not like he’s bone thin and I’m worried that he’s withering away, but I just wanna keep him plump and healthy. I’ve offered mealies, crickets, little bit of fruits last night a few hours after I brought him home and he basked for a little bit.
For lunch today after a few hours of basking, I tried a little bit of ground meat mixed with equal amounts of chicken feed (thats what the guy I got him from said that he fed all of his) with some mealies and he wasn’t interested at all.

He is pretty chubby and is very healthy looking but I just wanna make sure I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing regarding diet and everything.

Also- after about 10 mins in the feeding tub without eating, I was gonna put him back in his cage; I came up from behind him and pet his tail a little bit, he didnt jump or anything but he did this weird thing with his tail where he wiggled it like a snake- from the base, not the end. I’ve never owned a tegu before obviously so I’m trying to learn how they communicate and all I could compare the tail wiggling with was this Iguana I had for a while that was suppperr aggressive and that was his "Get the hell away from me" thing. And with my leopard geckos before he strikes for food, he wiggles his tail. Am I correct in guessing the tail wiggle was a ’Get the hell away you big scary person" thing?

I need to know your humidity and temps before I can give you good advice and answers, but at this age and size they are very picky, and don’t feed ground meat only whole foods like fish, pinkies, and insects. You can also give him egg yolk. If you follow what I do in a matter of months you can have a beast like mine Big red. He is only 6 months old.

And if you are using an aquarium you are going to want to build a wooden top like this.

Seal it off keeps heat and humidity in and they shed perfect every time.

He is in a 50 gallon long tank at the moment.

His humidity is around 85% and his basking/hottest temp in 125/130f.

He ate for the first time about an hour ago since I got him on Saturday the 3rd. He ate several giant mealies and 4 little fish. I was so happy to see him eat!

Wow, yours is beautiful!

To keep my humidity up I have ’sealed’ the screen top using tape and stretch wrap- seems to work very well.

He’s so sweet, he sleeps on my chest :3

Also, can I clip his nails?

Those things are sharp haha, however they are kinda soft...just wondering if it’s okay to clip them when their that small.

Apart from adding deeper substrate everythings fine?

Ive never had an animal that really needed high humidity and I’m just worried that he’ll get an RI because of HOW humid it id. I’m probably just being a worry wort but yeah xD
On the side of the tank theres water that drips down and what not.

When you add more substrate at will go high, but then go down to where it needs to be, and with the humidity at your level he will never shed any toes or tail off. And yes add more dirt and stick to a whole food diet and you will be good.

He loves soaking, I put him in the sink with some warm water when I take my showers and he just loves it.

He’s in the same cage shown in the first post- 50 something gallon long, 120ish basking, 80-85 humidity.
He burrows, basks, just such a good boy.

He refuses anything but crickets, fish and mealies though.
So fruits he is just not having. He had his first egg not too long ago and didn’t seem to enjoy it, but Ill offer it occasionally.

Here is red at 8 months old.

His diet is fish any where from catfish(I catch small ones and feed it to him whole), sunfish, bass, tilapia, and chunks of Speckled trout. Raw egg I bury it in the dirt he finds and eats it, Mice maybe once a months, and lots of insects. I don’t touch him unless I have to.

Why is it that you don’t touch him unless you have to?

I feed mine in a seperate tub- he is a very docile feeder, I can pick him up while hes in the middle of eating and it doesn’t bother him at all, I havent been bit yet either haha.

When i tried the egg it was raw.

believe it or not, but it does cause stress, and when I do have to move him he is perfectly fine. An that’s good. Have you tried fish?

Nope only when I had to. An I can go in there an pick him up with little fuss, and I didn’t have to hold him for hours and cause stress that is not needed.

As far as picking them up goes if the tegu knows you and is used to you it’s fine. My guy is the same way as yours leoluvr when it comes to eating I can pet him while he’s eating and I know this dosent stress him out. He’s in my spare room and when I let him free roam he comes up to me and crawls on my lap. For aggression not all tegus will become aggressive not if they know you, and tegus can recognize your voice your scent and what you look like. My guy is about a year and 3 months he’s just shy of ft long and 15 lbs and has never been aggressive. Tegus are very different as far as personalities go.

Yeah I don’t think he stresses out when he’s out and i’m holding him, he falls asleep almost immediately upon him laying down on my chest or in the hood of my jacket. And when I pet him he’ll close his eyes and he just seems relaxed as hell, I hope it doesn’t change! He seems to get more and more relaxed every day.

Funny how people bring up the "eye’s closing" thing. A study has been done where when animals of any kind close their eyes it is to relive stress. Think about it when you get a headache you close your eyes and headaches can cause stress on the human body. It’s sorta their way of saying whats happening is not really happening. For another example if some one throws a pencil at your eye what do you do? Close your eye. Not saying tegus like being held I to have notice mine getting a higher tolerance toward me, but that’s all it is a tolerance thing.

Hello!
For about a month now he has not come out of his cool side hide ONCE. I have taken him out, soaked him and offered food on many occasions and he refuses. Seems to just...go back to sleep. Hibernation? Is it dangerous for them to hibernate so small/young seeing as how they dont grow during hibernation?

Right before he ’went to sleep’ all my heat lamps went out, for about one week until i could go buy more and replace all of them, they all went without their heat bulbs. COuld this have kickstarted him to go into hibernation?

He doesn’t look skinny at all! Still looks great just...sleeping!

And tips? Did I ruin him for life? AM I A HORRIBLE TEGU MOTHER.

Anything will be appreciated<3 thank you

Basking of 120.
Middle keeps around 80.

Norbert has kept at the very very cool side....burried in a hole he made under a cork log. Temp there is 75.

Humidity (depending on time of day, after spraying, etcetc) is between 50 and 75.

If that is it you need way more dirt. I do a mix of Dirtxsabdxblack mulchxcypress mulch, and about 2ft of it. More hides is needed as well and the little thermometer you have is not a good way to tell what surface temps are just air temps. Get you a red dot heat thermometer like 20 at homedepo.

So my question had to do with his hibernation.

Can you (or anyone else) give me any tips regarding that?
