hey any argentine needs a 8x4x3 enclosure. i feed my tegu every day to every other day i feed him pinkies crickets mealworms eggs, and shredded turkey. so they eat alot! they need aroun an 110 basking spot and average temp 80-90. they get 4-41/2 feet. handle them every day to tame them. babies will outgrow a 30 gallon in a month or two. right now mine is in a 96 gallon rubbermaid tub. he will soon out grow it. a good place to get cages is boamaster great cages for a good price.

I currently breed Argentine Red tegus, they are the most impressive of all tegus in my eyes. I may be just a little partial... Anyway, I keep my breeding pair in a 15x4x5 homemade cage. I feed my tegus pedigree canned dog chow, and of course different fruits every other feed. They love grapes and fruit is required for proper digestion. I found that they do very well with the new heat coil basking spots. I do a uv bulb for light and a heat coil for basking. They love it.

I feed my tegus superworms, roaches, ground turkey, crayfish, mice, quail eggs, The occasional hatchling snake that fails to thrive, hatchling lizards that fail to thrive, excess reptile eggs, earthworm/night crawlers, silkworms, hornworms, grapes, strawberries, mango, banana, small bits of romaine lettuce, kiwi, apple and some other fruits I probably left out. However My tegu will not eat fruits/veggies on their own so i hide in their ground turkey.

I wouldnt suggest making dog food a regular part of any reptiles diet. Sure they’ll eat it but does that mean it’s ok?? Nope. You’ll have to be careful of many of the dyes contained in dog food (red dye #40 for example) and at best should be a rare treat. Fruits are required for shedding not for digestion, with vitmain A probably being the most important for the skin.

Fruits are important for both digestion and shedding as well yes. You see, in the wild fruits are one of the main elements of the tegus diet depending on the species. If you deprive certain species of fruit such as argentine reds, you will reap havoc on their digestive system and other systems as well. So make sure they get their fruit. And yes, most dog foods are unhealthy for both dog and lizard! lol However, the food that I feed my animals has raised many a tegu from birth to adulthood with no health problems and great breeding. You see people, there is more than one way about things, many are right, unfortunatley some are wrong. I suggest you take advice from people that have handled these animals and others for many years to get the best advice. Nice pic of the tegu and the chick

Id say about half a year. Well since mine hibernated after I got him, it took a little longer then normal.
On to feeding, I feed my tegus anything I can find that is on my feedling list....(very long list)
But since i breed rats, mice, and chicks i use them more often. And ground turkey cuz its easy to find and cheap and store.
