She is about 5-6 inches at this point. they were power feeding her at the pet store to get her to grow faster. I am not sure I want to continue that. It doesnt seem too healthy to me, but I am new with these guys. They fed her a live fuzzy mouse yesterday while we were there. I have plenty of frozen fuzzies and hoppers that I feed my monitor, plus I have all the crickets I can get. I am just not too sure how often I should feed her. I am gonna let her settle in for a day or two and then try to feed her.

I’m not sure if you can overfeed a tarantula. I think they only eat when they’re hungry. I’ve never been able to get mine to take anything dead, either. 3-4 nice, juicy crickets per week ought to keep her happy. :)

I may not be right but i wouldn’t think that would be enough...
My G.rosea can eat 5 or 6 crickets a week and still eat more...
again, just my opinion not sure if it’s right or not.

Really? Hmm. My A. seemanni usually fills up with about 3 crickets, if they’re big, and she’s 5"-5 1/2". I get nice big crickets from a bait shop, though. They’re cheaper and bigger than the pet store ones, so perhaps that makes a difference. And I suppose some tarantulas will just eat more than others.

speaking of bigger, I was thinking about feeding madagascar hissing roaches, does anyone know if they are ok to feed?

I tried a f/t fuzzie today to see if she would take it, and she did with no problems. I just wanted to test the waters to make sure she was settling in okay. I guess she is not too traumatized by her new environment. Lol.

Whenewa- Actually, I can’t right now. All of the bait shop’s crickets died from the heat, so now I’ve got little pet store crickets. lol

EjWebber- Ew! Haha, how did that go? How long did it take her to finish it off? When I did my mouse feeding my T was eating it for 2 days straight, and then I had a nasty mouse husk that stank to high heaven. XD

There was nothing left of the mouse after about 24 hours. (well, just a thumbnail size ball of something). I was wondering if anyone here could tell me if she is a male or female. Thanks,
Erin

I always wanted one of these, but am scared of being bitten.
Do you think they can be tamed so they get used to handling?

Tarantulas don`t tame. T.blondi would probably give you the worst hair kicking ever before biting.

Hey Ej careful feeding mice or other non-insect pray to your T. So far alot of what I have read the high amounts of calcium in the mice are bad for T`s. Also are you sure it`s a true T.blondi and not T.stirimi(think I spelled that right). They both look about exactly the same. I`ll have to look it up again because I`m not sure which it was but I believe it is T.stirimi that lack hair on the patella. Either way beautiful T and more power to you because I`ll be damned if I would mess with those hairs.

Tim

Hi Tim,
I found out the hard way that the mouse was a bed idea. She had complications during a molt and did not survive. I did experience the hair kicking and it is not fun at all. I still have my B Smithi and hope to expand my collection at some point. Sometimes life lessons are hard learned.

Sorry to hear it, also my bad, I didn’t pay attention on the PS3 that it was an older post. How is the B.smithi doing? Lol when ya going to expand the collection? The hairs actually bother me alot which is why even though I’m selling all my critters I’m hoping the New Worlds go quicker. Love them but the hairs make me break out.

My B Smithi is great. I have had her for quite some time now. I will try to get some updated pics this weekend and post them here. I am not expanding anytime soon. Lol. I have a house full of dogs, a cat, and 4 Leos. I hatched some eggs from the Leos and found good homes for the little ones. I will see what next spring does. haha! Here is an older pic of her.
