 Nervous Rat

Hello guys, I just got my first pair of rats from a local breeder. A dumbo named Rutherford and a rex named Lenny. Now Lenny is wonderfully friendly, he will run from the cage and jump onto my shoulder. Rutherford, while not mean, is not very friendly. He’ll tolerate being petted and will snatch Cheerios from my hand but will squirm and jump if held and skittish of even the smallest movements. Both are around 5ish weeks old, and I have had them a full week. (they’re in a 20 G long tank now just for a couple more days until theirs finally arrives). How can I get Rutherford to like being held and touched?

Thanks!

I would assume it will just take time! Keep giving him treats by hand and picking him up. Walk around with him in your hoodie. I have gotten alot of info off of Goose Moose.

I have 2 little girls now that are nervous and dont like being held. I pick them up and make them ride of my shoulder and hold them everyday. I give them treats by hand. They like to play with my hand and lick me. I put my arm in the cage and they run up and down my arm lol slowly but surely they will love me!

Thanks!

They’re slowly taking to me. They’re a little clumsy for shoulder rides but they like the hoodie :)
