See my reply on your other post. But seeing as you live in VA, it most probably is a Southeastern Five Lined Skink. I left you places to look it up, but sorry I attached it to your other post.

This is a hatchling blue-tailed skink...

Since you found him locally, you can make his enclosure similar to the spot that you found him, but in general they like an eco-earth substrate that can be found at Petco, or there is another brand called Forest something. They come in bricks, you put them in a larger container, like a bucket or I used an old styrofoam cooler and add water and it expands. It’s nice because it lasts quite a while.

You’ll want to put at least a couple of inches in because these fellas like to burrow. He will also need a large rock or log to hide under. They are shy at first, but if you leave him alone and don’t mess with him too much he’ll adjust fairly quickly. Keep the terrarium at a moderate ambient temp, about 75-80 degrees, with a higher basking spot of about 85-87 degrees. You should put the large rock or a log under your basking lamp so that it is the warm side of the tank, and keep the water dish on the other side, the cool side as they need the different temps to adjust their body temperatures.

They need UVA/UVB lighting. It very important that they have full spectrum lighting or they will die within a year of Metabolic Bone Disease, which is a painful death. You will also need to spinkle calcium supplement on the cricket or insects that you feed him, as they need the calcium also to prevent MBD.

Humidity should be around 65-80 percent. You should mist their enclosure at least once a day, they usually like to lick the leaves, pine cones, rocks etc. to drink, but they should also have a shallow water dish in their enclosure at all times.

There is a care sheet on this website, under blue-tailed skink. Take a look, and if you feel like you can’t provide the proper lighting/environment you should set him free. I know, I had one of these little guys and he died after about a year. I think we didn’t have the correct information soon enough!

Also as far as crickets, he needs pin-head crickets, they shouldn’t be any larger than his head as he could choke on them.

Good luck!

Sincerely,

Luke’s Mom
