Ground issues on my newts DD:

Okay so, I have two Paddle tailed newts that i rescued from a HORRIBLE environment
I also had two cory dora catfish so i combined all four.
im thinking this is a mistakje iove read online about catfish-newts=NO
because of spines on the fish.
but, the newts are very small.
their mouths are alot smaller than the fish
i just sat therer for a few minutes watching..
and i noticed my smaller newt, named jessie. start snapping.
i also just fed them though, he snapped a couple times at food.
once i think was aimed at the fish.
im taking the fish out when im done with this. yes at 4 am.

second issue.
ive heard put sand as your floor.
ive heard big pebbles.
nothing small.
well. jessie is the only one i have seen eat(i got them today)
and she bit into the food, god a mouthfull of sand and spit it out four times.
so im wondering if the sand was good or bad now.
also, im getting rid of the pebbles she almost swallowed one.

I thirdly, am worried if they like to hide or not i have a barrel in the tank with a few crevices they crawl into and cant be seen for a hour or so then they pop up by my filter. its frusterating haha

advice?tips?
help?
all is appreciated thank you
