 Firebelly Newt Questions

I’m thinking about getting a firebelly newt this weekend or next, and I’d just like to hear some people’s opinions on them and any tips you guys might have. I’ve never owned any amphibians, although I used to breed leopard geckos and i have 3 crested geckos and a leopard gecko now.

Mostly, I’d like to see pictures of habitats you might have so i have something to go off of when i set up the tank.

And any good care sheets that you know are accurate would be helpful.

 Firebelly Newt Questions

I have owned a newt for about 20 years now. They actually will live a long time, if you keep their tanks cleaned{ about once a wk.} Never put them in a tank where they cannot get out of the water to dry land. I made that mistake when I purchased my first newt. The sales clerk misinformed me on how to care for a newt. It was a horrible experience. I have always fed my newt ReptoMin {floating food sticks}. He has outlived anything I have ever owned, he may very well be the oldest living newt in history. They are easy to maintain, and make a great pet. Good luck with your newt!!

 Fire belly Newt Questions

Hello,
We recently bought two fire belly newts having taken advice from the pet shop. However i now believe the advice to have been wrong and wondered if anyone here could help clear things up.
Originally i was told to use sand as the base in the tank as even small gravel would cause harm to their skin although now all the advice i have seen seems to say to use gravel. Which should it be?

Also, and far more urgently, they do not seem to be eating. I have been giving them frozen bloodworm every other day but it just seems to be collecting on the sand at the bottom of the tank.

Finally, how would i tell if they are Chinese fire belly’s or Japanese? Again when i first took advice from the pet shop there was no mention of there being different types. From reading the care sheets on here i suspect they are the latter as they seem to prefer basking on the rocks to being in the water.

Any help would be appreciated as my seven year old is getting very worried about them.
