Fire Belly Newt questions Ok so I totally fell in love with a fire belly newt at the pet store. He is so cute and I might get him. I would like to know as much as I can about fire belly newts before I purchase him. I would like to know tank size, water temp, etc, anything that is good to know about these little guys would be great. I will post pictures if I get him.
Thanks much,
Angel

Fire Belly Newt questions What king of FBN is it? Chinese. Japanese, Paddletail, etc?
No matter what kind it is they like cool water like 60s.
Tell us more about him so we can tell you more.

Fire Belly Newt questions He is a paddletail and I got him on Saturday. He is loving his new aquarium, it is a 5 1/2 gallon-he is about 2 inches long. He was kept in a 2 1/2 gallon with fire belly toads! I put some fish fry in with him and he started eating them right away! He is a fat little guy. I keep saying he and I am not sure if he is a he or a she. I will post some pictures when I get a chance. He is reddish brown with blotches of red and orange on his belly, he has a wide head. The water is low to mid 60s. I love to sit and watch him stalk the fish, he almost touches them and then with lightening speed he grabs them. I named him Popito (pronounced poe-pee-toe). Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.

Fire Belly Newt questions 2 inches? Wow! That is small. Eventually you’ll want to move him to a 10 gallon tank. My 3 range from 5 to 8 inches.
They only eat moving prey so fish fry are fine. Mine ate some of my fish and thy absolutely love trout worms. I tried feeding them every day at first and became frustrated when they wouldn’t eat. It finally dawned on me to feed them every 3 days. I’ve stopped that and now feed them when they come to the front of the tank where I feed them. One eats from my hand, one likes to be tweezer fed and the one who is ill likes to hunt for them on his own.
As for sexing, the male will have white spots along the tail whereas the female won’t.
Give him 2 to 3 hides. They are highly aggressive. I read on one website that they are "considered the pit bull of newts". Mine have been pretty docile. Some fighting in the beginning but once I changed the tank and added more hides all was calm. Recently, the female has been ready to breed so my 2 males went after each other. That’s how one became hurt and is trying to fight off the limb rot.
I love these guys! Such personality and they totally respond to me and my son (daughter could care less). He loves when it is feeding time because it’s such fun watching them eat their worms.
Wow, I could go on forever about these guys! Enjoy yours!

Fire Belly Newt questions Well he is probably closer to 3 inches but yeah he is small. I will move him eventually to at least a 10 gallon. I love watching this little guy! Everytime I sit down to watch him he comes close to the glass to watch me-it’s very cute! He seems to love fish-he is always stalking them. I am going out this week to get a floating turtle log and 1-2 hides for the bottom. I was also thinking of getting gravel (large enough that he can’t swallow) and putting some fake plants so he can hid in as well. Can fish fry be the only diet or should I also look into worms, etc? My fish have babies out of control so it’s free!
Thanks,
Angel

Fire Belly Newt questions I don’t see why not. People do say to try a variety which I pretty much have but mine won’t eat anythings but worms and the occasional fish. They eat based on sight meaning it has to be moving for them to see it. I have river rock on the bottom of the tank so I’ll drop in a worm for the hunter. It borrows in the river rock and comes up later which is when it will be eaten.
One of mine loves plants (the hunter). I have live plants and made the bottom of the tank into a jungle of all different types. Half the time I can’t find him but as soon as the girl comes out of his cave he comes out of the jungle. Some people say the paddle tail will eat the snails that come in with the plants but mine don’t. Instead, I collect them when I see them and toss them into the ACFs tank because they like to eat them.
I take it you found out he is a boy? Your post used all masculine pronouns. Enjoy! And your welcome.

Fire Belly Newt questions Yeah I am not doing live plants anymore. I had live plants with my fbts and now I have 1,000s of snails and I can’t seem to get rid of them so hubby said no live plants. I am pretty sure it is a boy due to the size of his head but I can not be sure so he will be a boy until I find out otherwise =-D I will post some pictures when I have his tank done. I’ll get him some worms at the pet store to see if he likes them. I’ll definitely keep the fry in with him since he seems to like them so much. Thanks again for your help, I appreciate it very much!

Fire Belly Newt questions You really shouldn’t as the toxins can kill each other. You can add one more FBT. A FBN requires its own 10 gallon tank.

Fire Belly Newt questions Angel, Nicole ! what do you do to make your newts docile?, or to be trained? to eat by my hand?, how do you feed them? what are the procedures.
Should i give them food with my hand, or make a feeding area?

Fire Belly Newt questions When I first got them I spent alot of my time with my hands in the tank trying to rearrange their areas. Also when I first fed them, I just threw the food in their own individual areas. When they started coming to their feeding areas when it was time to eat I started feeding them by hand. They were taking it but I then started to lose motor control of my hands and they got confused thinking my twitching fingers were worms so I started using long tweezers. It works pretty well. They still see my hand but don’t try to nibble on me. If I put my hand in the tank for maintenance they will climb over it.

Fire Belly Newt questions I was cleaning my newt’s tank last night and he was trying to climb on me. I was actually able to hold him for the first time for about 15 seconds! He eats crickets from tweezers only. If they are floating on the water he will not go after them-I have tried it. He is just so fascinated with me. Even if he is in his hide or log he will come over to the glass when I am around the tank. He is so much fun! I am very glad I got him. I am gonna update his tank to a 10 gallon (I was told on a care sheet that 5-10 gallons was sufficient and he is in a 5 1/2 gallon). I am gonna breed the mollies in the 5 gallon for his food-he LOVES molly and guppy fry. He likes to stalked them and then jump on them-he thrashes his head around like a little gator-too cute!

Fire Bellies Hey. I was considering getting some fire bellied newts (Japanese). I am able to provide a ten gallon tank, a steady bloodworm diet with the occasional crickets, some plastic plants, large rocks for the bottom, a hiding place, and a filter which I will try to make a small trickle water fall with. I have yet to purchase the little dudes and I was wondering how active they are and if I can fill their needs. What would be signs of healthy FBN at the pet shop. Thanks
