 Leucistic Rat Snake

I saw a Leucistic Rat Snake and was really impressed with it. I would like to see if it is possible to find one for sale or adoption. JHR64

Yes, what you probably saw was a leucistic texas rat snake, which happen to be very common in the pet trade. There are alot for sale on kingsnake .com in the classifieds and there are also a bunch for sale at expos.
But if you buy one be sure to research its proper care BEFORE YOU BUY IT

And many have nasty tempers that may take some major TLC to get them calmed down. So ask about that when you find a potential pet if you cant handle one that may bite. There are some gems out there that are totally cool from birth. I got lucky recently and found an adult that is more mellow than my milksnakes.

well usually if you get one when its young then by the time it is big enough to really bite hard it should have calmed down

Definitely. I just hear alot about it being hit or miss. I see people reporting alot how they have really sweet adults, and then they have other adults that are just evil no matter what you do. Either way though these guys are gorgeous and make great display animals! I would be happy with one if it was good natured or not.

Thanks for the feedback. I definitely will take the time to learn more about them before I take one in.

Thanks. I don’t mind a nip every now and then. It would not deter me. The one I handled this past weekend was as docile as my corn snake. JR

there is one thing that you really need to look for when you buy them though leucistic texas rats were inbreed a lot and as a result there has been a small problem with some of them their eyes bulge out of their head it is not a major problem they still make good pets but you DO NOT want to use them as a breeder i have 3 of them right now and they can be aggressive but it is not very hard to tame them down well it wasn’t for mine i could have just got lucky though and they are not very expensive your looking at spending 40-50 for a baby and 100-125 for an adult at a store and if you have a pet store that isn’t like pet co or petsmart they can more than likely order one for you

My favorite Rat snake by far. Hardy, spunky attitude, and usually do great as captives. And yep their are alot of bug eyes out there, but they still make great pets. I say do your homework (pretty basic) and go for it. Bug eyes need love too! :)
