It should be fine but Antaresia Childrenii get longer than just 2.5 feet they can actually get to nearly 4 feet fully grown you might want to mention that to your mom. There is still no guarantee that it wont take on the guinea pig if it gets out and hungry enough specially if the GP is small. Aspen or newspaper is a good substrate.

 Children’s python.

she realizes the adult size now, and shes ok with it. i want to set up a naturalistic vivarium, so would a substrate of aspen, coconut fiber, and sand be ok with a layer of leaf litter over that? i think their north australian habitat is much like wherei live in central florida(dry with seasonal rain)

 Children’s python.

Sand is no good for them mate, they really are rock dwellers, often found on the entrances to caves trying to snare flying bats. If you want a nturalistic substrate i would just put a hard dirt and gravel mix on the bottom topped with leaf litter and cocofiber or aspen. Make sure that you provide a suitable hide. Basking spot 30-33 C cool side 24-26 C, all australian pythons are predominantly nocturnal by the way. Ensure all light sources are covered with light cages as well. The Antaresia group of Australian pythons are also predominantly terestrial so no need for a high enclosure. Childrenis do well in smaller enclosures 3.5x2x2 (LxWxH) should be more than enough for them.

Australian pythons are not like other pythons in their feeding either, i suggest looking (research) quite heavily into this part of their husbandry.

 Children’s python.

i just set up a 20 long in preparation with a mix of coco fiber and aspen that i packed down when it was moist so now its very hard and dry. i then gave it a thin layer of leaf litter. its pretty heavily decorated, with rock and wood. i have an uth and a heat lamp on one side. ive never heard of any special feeding requirements, just two mice a week. can you please elaborate?

 Children’s python.

Due to environmental adaptation to the Australian conditions, OZ pythons need to eat at lot less than what pythons would need from other parts of the world. If you follow the general feed schedule for all other python species what you are inevitably doing is "power feeding" your Australian specimen which will lead to major health problems for your python.

My friends only feed their antaresias at ceratin times of the year the rest of the time they go as much as a couple of months in between feeding sometimes more. Pay close attention to the condition of your specimen if you want it to stay healthy if it’s in good condition there is no need to feed weekly that will do more harm than good.
