just to clarify... the 10’ figure pertains more to the Coastal Carpet.. there are many varieties of Carpets.. most getting around 6’..

There are different types of carpets, it all depends on what size/color YOU want.
Coastals-9-10 feet
Irian Jayas-5-6 feet
Bredli-6-7 feet
Jungles-6-7 feet
Diamonds-8-9 feet
(I’m just typing these from the top of my head. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong :))
There are also Scrub (Moluccan Pythons) and Green Tree Pythons which are also in the Morelia spp., but those are not recommended for beginners!

Carpets are typically very hardy in captivity, they eat great and handle well. Neonates (babies) are typically nippy, but they soon outgrow it with regular handling (just don’t overdo it). You’ll need to feed your carpet an appropriate sized mouse/rat once a week. Appropriate size meaning about the size of the snakes mid-section. I keep my Bredli at about 85-90 degrees, and I keep them in plastic tubs with newspaper as a substrate, and give them water bowls of course (everything needs water!). I use UTH (under tank heaters) with ALL my snakes, I hate heat lights and I refuse to recommend them to people who keep snakes. You can use heat tape, or a commercially made UTH, but with either of those you will need a dimmer, or a thermostat (naturally I recommend a thermostat over a dimmer).
Let me know if you have any other questions, I would love to help out, seeing as Carpets are one of my favorite species of snake :)

If they’re just selling it as a "carpet python," watch out. It’s probably either a coastal or a coastal/jungle hybrid. That 9-10 foot average for coastals was a bit of stretch. Average is 7 or 8, but 10 is certainly no record setter. A really big one can even go into the teens. My nine-footer coastal’s skeletal bulk is more like a red-tail’s than a jungle carpet’s. Coastals, because of their larger size, tend to lay more eggs than the smaller types, so the captive population is a bit topheavy with them. It’s easy to buy a baby carpet expecting it to stop growing around six feet, and find out that their snake didn’t read the same book. Not saying coastals are bad pets, just that they should be what you want and plan for, not what you just end up with. The difference between a four foot Irian Jaya and a six and half foot Irian Jaya really isn’t as big a deal as the difference btween a five foot coastal and a ten foot coastal.

i understand what your saying but if ti gets to be 10’ thats fine with me, i dont really care how big it gets just how it looks i guess, i was thinking about getting a burmese but the price tag is a little high for me right now but at the same time i wouldnt want a burmese that gets say 20’ and wieghts 40lbs or what ever would be normal. i also just dont have the space for a burmese, but back to carpets, like i was saying i dont care about the size. it just gives me more to love. once i have the space time and money i may think about a burmese but i dont know yet.

Bleh... I hate petstores. If I were you, I’d go on kingsnake .com and get a quality animal, for a reasonable price. They’re probably going to rip you off at the petstore anyway, and try and sell you a bag of calci-sand while they’re at it

$130 isn’t bad at all, that is if he’s nice and healthy and robust. Just be sure to keep him away from your other snakes for about 2-3 months.

Scooter, if you don’t have the space for a Burmese, then it MATTERS if your carpet gets 10 feet long. Carpets use more space for their size than Burms, so a large female coastal would use as much space as a male Burm. The large ones often can’t stay arboreal as late in life as the small ones can, so as you get into bigger and bigger carpets, the space needs often become more and more horizontal, assuming you’re actually interested in the animal’s entire life and not just in keeping it for a decade or so as a novelty item/ laying hen. Sorry if I sound cranky. Bad day. I’ll explain in another thread rather than hijack this one.

What do you mean commercially made UTH? Where would I get a non commercial one, home depot? I’ve never seen them outside of pet shops...
