Hello everone my name is mike I have had my retic for about 3 months now love him hes great...hes about 4’; with a 1" thickness and 375 grmas...ill post pics soon.....Anyway today he got his first small rat which is about 75 grams...i feed him weekly..Now what I was ghoing to do is basically....now hes 4’ so im giving him 1/3 his body weight every 2 weeks.....which is about a small rat a week...hope thats not too confusing...well anway at 5’ im going to do 1/4 every 2 weeks.....at 6’ 1/5 every 2 weeks and eventually when he starts rabbits at about 7’ which around here are asbout 1.5 pound rabbits are the smallest I was going to do 1/7...and then when hes about 10 or 11 feet switch him to 1/10 or 10% every 2 weeks......so for example if I have a 3 year old tic thats 11ft and about 40 pounds...id give him a 4 pound rabbit every 2 weeks or an 8 pound rabbit every month......I got all this info basically for the most part from Whats Wrong With My Snake its a good book and many internet sites...I was evemn told a full grown retic would be better off on a 1/12 every 2 weeks diet??? What does everyone here think...also wouldlove to see some pics of adult male nomrlas:)

ps: just a little more about me im almost 20 years old I go to school and bartend stil;l live at home and already have a large cage ready for my tic when hes big..as for past experienece ive ha d a 9’ burm and a 8’ boa just in preparation for this:)

Your feeding regimen sounds fine. You will find a multitude of opinions on how big, and how often prey items should be. Some people thing retics, because of their growth rate and size, should be fed until they refuse. Others beleive a more modest, every two weeks schedule, more closely resembles what they would get in the "wild" and will make for a healthier snake. Like most things, I fall about in the middle. So really, there is a lot of flexability on this issue, just make sure to feed your snake, and you will be fine.

thanks alot now what about the 1/12 every 2 weeks thing as an adult ??? is that too little....thats averages out to be 2x their body weight a year which is what most adult constrictors shoulbe get as the books and research I have done had said

Why are you trying to be so mathematical, it hurts my head, lol.

Just feed it what you think is appropiate as you go about.

What I noticed when I first bought my retic is this, a rat that would take a ball python 4 days to digest, a retic of smaller size will digest it in 2 days. So I started my retic on small rats and then noticed it didnt even leave a bulge. The next time I went to the shop to buy him rats I got him medium rats. It left a bulge, but the next day the rat was barely visible. So then I got him a large rat and that is what he is feeding on right now. It leaves a bulge for about 2-3 days.

Now, if you want to "control" the retics’ growth I would go with something a bit smaller than what it "can" take. For example when my retic was feeding on medium rats, he was in good weight, sheding, pooping, pissing a lot. but when I switched him to large rats, he seems to be growing every day. i will feed him a good sized food item until he hits maturity. Then I will go slower on food because from what I read their metabolism slows down as they do not need as much nutrients to grow since they have alrady attained a good size, that should be about 13’. I plan on slowing down because I preffer to have a normal sized male than a monster 18’-19’ feet male.

yeah , i agree .
it`s not like a car , where you always put in an exact amount of oil or water in it.
your animal is not an exact science
just like el3men2 said . it`s more trial and error
our retic is real energetic when she`s hungry.lately after a jumbo rat she looks like she still wants more. we tried 2 rats . we were told by people on this forum that a rabbit might do her better , because they have more fat
we`re going to move up to a baby rabbit this weekend
i don`t think a book will help me with this decision.we just know when it`s time by knowing our snake
just get to know your snake
you dog , your cat , your kid , thay all let you know with their actions if they`re not getting enough food
same with your snake. read your snake.
and keep asking questions on this forum . alot of these guys breed retics and know from expeirience what to look for

i here both good and bad about putting your snake in a pool .
my son doesn`t do it alot , but they love the freedom , and just go full on all around the pool. he feels it`s good exercise for them
it is truly bad , or not bad for them?
thanks for the encouraging comments by the way about my son

BTW... It’s hot in florida... pool temps are still very high. I think that may have been a concern for a few people. I have seen a few other people on this site who soak condas their pool when temps are right. Pretty cool to see and doesn’t seem to harm the snakes at all. They seem to enjoy it.
