gotta tell you man, that tank is awesome! very nicely done! i’m actually in the process of building one myself, and i have one question for you. i noticed your doors open downward, and i wouldn’t think normal plexyglass would be sturdy enough to do that, what did you use for that? is it just normal glass?

actually in my opinion plexi is stronger than glass if you buy the right time, and while being stronger is also much more forgiving than glass and resistant to cracking if you buy the right kind. i buy 1/4 inch plexi that is shatter proof and basically break proof short of throwing a 20 lb bowling ball at it. i buy plexi because unlike glass it doesnt shatter or pose a danger if it does break.

i used 1x3s to make my door frames out of, used a biscuits to glue it together then i router out a 1/4th inch groove in the wood, take my frames in and have the plexi cut to size then my corners are rounded so i lay the plexi mark the corners and round them on a grinding machine.

then i lay the plexi in the frame and screw it down with fasterners that hold it in place

the plexi isnt going anywhere at all and doesn’t even groan when opening or closing the doors.

personally i will never use glass. i payed 39.00 dollars each for the plexi on the doors.

pretty much turns the wood into plastic, then i used tub and tile clear calk in all joints and cracks. i will probably take the tank and in 2 years will sand it down reapply couple coats of polycrylic and wait another 2 years and see what happens. i may never have to do anything to it, another guy i know brad baysinger or the snakeguru, myreptileplanet.com owner used the same thing laytex and polycrylic in his 12x6x6 retic cage and he has had it for 5-10 years i think with 0 problems so no worries.
