 My son’s Plated Lizard

hello everyone my son picked up this beauty at the Repticon convention. he was told she is a she. Any idea what type and possible age she is approx. 14 inches snout to tail. she is not eating as much as i hoped to see her eat for her size but she is eating some. Any tips would be great. Thanks for looking.

it is a blacklined plated lizard (a.k.a. giant plated lizard or red-sided plated lizard). that’s probably one of the smallest blacklined plated lizards i’ve ever seen. it is probaly about 8 months old.
what have you been feding it?

Crickets and mealworms , We are trying fruit and veggies but she is not interested yet. But we will keep trying.

Yes what is the trick to the fruits and veggies. Sorry to steal your thread here but I am also in the same situation as yourself. What do you other keepers feed your plateds?

Raw ground turkey, hard boiled egg, crickets, pinkie (sometimes adult) mice, occasionally superworms, minnows/ fish, apples, peach, strawberry, mango, carrots, collared greens, and some other things.

A way to get them to eat greens is to pour chicken broth on the veggies and greens, and less broth over time.

Mine is n’t eating as good as I would like him or her to eat. This lizard is beginning to suck. I mean barely interested in crickets and I do catch grasshoppers for it. It is fairly calm when handled and have a heat lamp and a UTH for it and it still sucks. I hold food in front of its nose and it licks whats on my fingers, but no actual consumption. It will eat some crickets when I dissappear but it doesnt eat all the crickets. I even gave it meal worms and it looks at them and walks away. Is the chicken broth the favourite flavour of these lizards. Its depressing. Help

Please elaborate on these statements, because i know when people don’t like their pets they generally don’t give them the greatest care.... I’m assuming that if you bought it out of impulse, that it was something new and cool and now it "sucks" once the excitement has worn off.

If you really think of it like this i wouldn’t advise you to buy any animals.

I agree.

Plateds and other diurnal reptiles need more than just heat to survive and thrive in captivity. You said that you have an UTH and a heat lamp, but do you can a UV light source on it?

As for the thread starter, nice looking Black-line you have there. I have one myself. Don’t give up on the veggie thing. Mine was stubborn to start with about eating veggies, but now he eats all kinds of stuff with no complaint. It took some time though, I won’t lie about that.
