 Acanthosaura lepidogaster

I just came out of the field from another survey, this time in Northern Thailand, along the frontier region between Thailand and Myanmar. I thought I would share a picture of how exceptional these animals look in the wild. This Acanthosaura lepidogaster was found in rather atypical habitat. The mountainous terrain in which it was found was Montane Moist Forest/Mist Forest, but it was a Mixed Coniferous/Deciduous Forest with much less canopy than I am used to finding Acanthosaura spp. The microhabitat was suitable; it was in a rather thickly wooded valley floor that had more canopy than the surrounding area.
Well, here it is for your viewing pleasure, a very brightly marked male Acanthosaura lepidogaster:

For those interested in environmental data: It is the middle of the rainy season, temperatures ranged between 17°-25°C (much colder in the cold season), humidity was very high; we were enveloped in mist (clouds moving through at our high elevation) most of the time.

Cheers,
Michael

I know of another ’true’ lepidogaster photo, but I can’t find it!

As usual your post is greatly appreciated.

A¢¼,

You must be very careful about using other people’s pictures; you can get yourself and the website in some serious legal problems, especially if they are published like the first picture you posted. The reason I put my name on all pictures that I post on the internet, is because I have seen them being used by other people. The first picture you posted belongs to Peter Paul van Dijk and is published in Cox, van Dijk, Nabhitabhata & Thirakhupt 1998. A Photographic Guide to Snakes and Other Reptiles of Thailand and South-East Asia: 93.

Klaus-Dieter Schulz and Wolfgang Grossmann also have nice pictures in Amphibians and Reptiles of Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand. An illustrated Checklist, p. 91. Written by Tanya Chan-ard, Wolfgang Grossmann, Andreas Gumprecht and Klaus-Dieter Schulz 1999.

Cheers,
Michael

I’m not really worried about it. What is the difference whether it appears on this website or another? It’s not like I’m claiming it to be mine. Anyway, you can easily check out the properties and see where the photo came from, so there is my reference!

I mean, obviously the person who published the photo wanted it to be seen, and if they wanted credit, they would’ve put their name on it like you did.

Also, I didn’t even upload the photos, I put the link on my post. But HTML coding allows the picture to be displayed rather than just the link. When you break it down, no wrong has been done.

Once again, I’m not worried about it.

"Cheers"

Since I uploaded another picture of the Acanthosaura lepidogaster, I figured that I would share it. I did not realise that there were so few pictures of them.

I am pleased to inform everyone that it survived the rest of the survey and the long trip back and is now on display at the Thailand Natural History Museum. It is no longer the bright green colour that it once was, but is doing well.

A¢¼, it was not a question of you being worried about it. It is a question of copyright infringement (which is stealing). Whether or not another website is wrongfully using an image or not, you are still breaking US and international law and pulling the website into liability problems. Stealing something that was stolen by someone else still does not relieve you or the website of liability or wrongdoing.

Cheers,
Michael

Michael,

Thanks so much for posting....that is a beautiful animal. I wish I had a pair for breeding! I’m glad that it is doing well at the Museum....are they planning on breeding? I would love to have a pair to breed and make CB babies available...maybe some day....

Thanks again for posting, I love looking at the pictures your informative posts. Take care...Angie

Angie,

Although breeding is possible with the captives at the museum, it is not planned. They recently had some turtle eggs which I supplied vermiculite and something to incubate them in. I had a bit of luck with eggs this year, hatching 100% of the eggs I knew about and 4 Malayemys subtrijuga and an Indotestudo elongata (which was a result of a double clutch) that I did not know about.

Cheers,
Michael

Alright Michael, you win. I remorse for my hateful crimes; please forgive me and I shall never show another picture that doesn’t belong to me to anyone else again.

Now to Mountain Horned Dragons. I have seen plenty of coronata, and plenty of lepidogaster. But I have only seen one dragon like this...

Now, this a variation of coronata I’m sure. But the stunning green of this one, and the black markings on the back are very similar to the ones on A. lepidogaster, unlike other A. coronata. In fact, if this one had red lips and a mask, it would be indstinguishable between the lepidogaster.

You said somewhere in the above that your specimen has lost its color. That is a shame. I have had this MHD for around a year now. It too regressed to a dark, dark shade of green, almost black. However, it too always remained healthy and eating. A few months ago, I moved her to a new enclosure, in which I partially changed the way I took care of her. Low and behold, her colors have been revived to the above state (24/7). Now she is also gravid and definatly doing well.

Anyway, I hope your MHD at the museum also gets its colors back, it a shame to keep a MHD and not get to see it in its best. The bricht green ones are definatly a sight for sore eyes.

Ryan

I have a lizard that looks just like this one, but mine has a blue tongue. Does yours or do I have some different type of MHD? I am trying to figure out what she really is. Thanks, misty
