 Baby Nile monitor

Hello guys I need help I recently got a Nile monitor by mistake because I ordered a water monitor and I’ve owned many monitor species so I’m not new but anyway I found out it was a nile monitor because of the nostrils but I kept it anyway and I’m keeping him in a 20gal right now but I have a much larger custom built cage for when he gets bigger but I cannot get him to interact with me he eats well but is very skittish has not tried to bite me or tail whip but when ever I open the cage he runs and hides his temps are fine basking spot is 131 I checked with an inferred temp gun cooler side is 82 where his hide is I have a uvb bulb and 150watt basking bulb I keep plastic over the screen so humidity doesn’t escape humidity is 50 to 60 percent I have cardboard on all sides but the front to make him feel more secure I have a large enough water tub inside for him to swim along with a small water dish he is also on loose coconut fiber substrate I have so far fed him cut up catfish fillets and calcium dusted crickets along with multivitamin I’ve tried tong feeding but he just runs away can someone give me some tips on how to bond with this guy and FYI he’s already acclimated

Try things step by step, bonding can take months, years or never. For a few weeks sit by the cage so he’ll get use to your presence then let him know who’s feeding him then later on try to tong feed. You can then rub him then finally hold him for minutes at a time then when he’s use to this let him free roam under supervision for a while. But Niles in my experience is one of the most untameable, unpredictable and least trusting monitor right behind my croc, this may or may not work. Niles are more of a display varanid and one of the most hardest ones to calm down (hate using tame in varanid species). After a while he may get use to your presence but not handling.

His teeth with be fine..
Niles are a notoriously difficult species to interact with. they tend to be more of a hands off monitor and dont trust easy. i would change the substrate tho to allow for digging and to hold humidity. i recommend a 50/50 sand soil mixture ..
good luck

You have a 150 watt basking bulb for a 20 gallon tank?

Can you post pictures of your enclosure? That’s a huge amount of wattage for such a small enclosure. I have a 4’ trough that only requires a 100 watt bulb. Something isn’t right.
