How did you acquire lace monitors when Australia prohibits exportation of their reptiles? Just curious, because I’ve always wanted a Gouldii but could never find one in the united states. I’m in California.

Lace monitors and Gouldii were bred, by Frank Retes and a few others, in the States a long time ago. Pure Gouldii are gone and lace monitors have become very rare in the States. I don’t breed them out of greed like you’ve mentioned. I do so because I like working with them and don’t want them becoming unavailable in the States like Gouldii. I’ll never get my investment back and that’s never been the plan.

Bearded dragons are also from Australia and they’re everywhere. Years ago, Australian species were imported.

I’d like to get a pair of pure gouldii, always been my favorite. Man you sure hold on to , guess your skin isn’t as thick as the lacies. Many people do breed out of pure greed.

Pure Gouldii just for you Charles. Unfortunately, they’re old (old when I got them) and haven’t bred.

I think you have subspecies not actual gouldii from red sands australia, whatever though. You must feel special having what you do.

Compare the pictures, maybe they are different localities, how to determine if yours is pure gouldii and my picture isn’t. You know everything right? Yours isn’t pure v.g.g. . Yours is bigger subspecies of the I was showing you.

There are many different localities. Try googling lace monitors, croc monitors, etc. You’ll find different colors, different sizes, different looks, different builds, etc. but, they’re all the same species. And, no I do not know everything.

Damn I would feel special too if i had such an uncommon monitor lol but I can agree with 3240 with the differences of size, color, and build in monitors because I’ve actually seen water monitors bigger than mine in size with some having different patterns. But let’s not start arguing, this is for sharing/helping.....3240 is one of the monitor geniuses I’ve seen since I started on this forum and by his word I’m pretty sure that monitor’s pure but that monitor is amazing can’t wait to see what the babies will look like as adults its gonna be stunning omg!

Little envious but I am happy with the one I got, reptiles seem to be so robust in morphs and size. Not going to argue when there is no cause for it.

How much do you charge of a Lace? Merten’s are listed at a cool $4k on fauna classifieds, I’m sure you charge top dollar due to their rarity.

I paid $35k to import my group from Europe. Normal phase typically sell for $5k and bells phase typically sell for $10k. Not sure how much I’ll ask for them and I may not sell any. If you include my reptile facility I have about $125k sunk into this project not including food, power, time, etc. This isn’t a money maker. They’re not that easy to breed. so every year is a crap shoot. Nesting is tough.

I don’t a price guide as to the value of each monitor, but V. varius is a somewhat common Australian varanid. Why $35k for a group? I read that a single Komodo dragon goes for that on the black market. I suppose you are extremely passionate and have a very lucrative career. I think its cool your doing something you love at a level I’m not aspiring to reach. Hope you make some money back for retirement or just to save for later. I will eventually buy a male or female once I know the sex of my monitor. I need some friends with the same interest, lonely not having anyone to share the joy I get from this hobby/passion/pet.

They’re very common in Australia but very difficult to find outside of Australia. Australia hasn’t exported in a long time. That’s why most Aussie species are so expensive. My group came from Europe, not Australia. They all but disappeared from the U.S. market until a few of us imported some from Europe.

Spend $35k on a Komodo (they’ve been offered to me once) and you’re stuck with an animal that will send you to jail. You couldn’t give one to me free of charge.

This isn’t an investment for me. It’s strictly a hobby. I focus on Lace monitors because they’re such a fun species. Nice looking, extremely intelligent, active, etc. They have great personalities. Spencers monitors are also a lot of fun.

I ’d have a good time at your house, better than a trip to the zoo. Bet the kids in your family love to visit and hold the smaller lizards. Your setup must have taken years to get right. I just need a job with consistent hours so I may take my monitor project further, I need a house with a yard. I really want an indoor outdoor setup, like a doggie door from on side to the other. It gets very hot and stays hot May to the end of October.
