What to do next with Savannah Monitor

Howdy,
I’ve had a savannah monitor for about 3 weeks now letting him get adjusted to his home, so far he has not given me any problems in terms of hissing, biting, or whipping. He does however extend his stomach when I touch his back. He lets me pick him up without squirming after I started doing some water training. So my question is, he is still a little skiddish of me and looking around the internet there isn’t a solid answer for what my monitor is doing, not aggressive just indifferent. Any suggestions?
Thank you so much

Water training is a form of torture. Don’t do it. The Internet is not your friend when it comes to monitor husbandry. Just leave him be and let him get used to you on his terms. Just be patient and don’t force it.

I’d like to water train the guy who thought water training was humane.

Who started the water training myth?

yah ditch the water training pronto. Building trust with your monitor on his terms can be a very long process, however in the end it is so much more fulfilling, and you know your monitor is not stressed, and will be much happier and healthier because of it.
Young savs are always very shy and will let you hold them with little fuss cause they are basically terrified and playing sort of dead. Once they get larger and reach adulthood they get much more bold and there true personalities come out, biting, hissing, ect. This is why a lot of people originally get baby savs cause mistake there terrified behavior as being docile little dudes and then generally rehome them ones they turn into there true smarty pants selves when they no longer fear your gonna eat them.

I suggest an 8" deep substrate, a humidifier with plumber’s hose for humidity control (especially in a tank setup) and keeping a journal for tracking food intake and behavior. I feed my varanid in my tub with rubber mats on the bottom for traction. Before each feeding she usually poops first, I clean it up, then I toss in the first item. At the end of each session I offer her food with the tongs; which she hates with a passion. I am a new keeper, this is what I have done for four months.

With substrate you don’t need a humidifier. The substrate holds moisture and will keep humidity levels up. Just put food in the enclosure. Keep it simple.

I assuming you have a screen top?

The reasons for deep substrate are burrowing and humidity. You don’t need a humidifier if the enclosure is setup properly.

Half screen and half plexiglass isn’t going to work. If you need a humidifier the enclosure isn’t going to work. The best and easiest enclosures are made using troughs. Fill the trough with substrate and build a top for it. The lights need to be inside of the enclosure and the top needs to be solid.

Here’s a picture of one of my enclosures. I use it for dwarf monitors and as a raise up cage for large monitor hatchlings.

That’s funny all is well, humidity stays 60%rh, I’ve got 8" of substrate and I am working on her permanent enclosure. I think you need to read a bit more, I read Krusty’s REPTILES magazine article and he states "a 36" glass enclosure with plexiglas cover half is suitable for hatchlings". You are not the authority and should not be correcting my husbandry; I am well researched and prepared, thanks.

I dont care, but Krusty did state in his article my style enclosure is suitable for at least nine months, as he reaffirmed in a personal message he sent me months ago. Calling me an idiot make you look like a spoiled fool, a narcissist of sorts. I never said she’d stay in this enclosure more than a few more weeks and I did state I am having a proper enclosure built. I can’t argue with stupid, egghead where is your doctorate, if so which happy meal did you get it out of? You pictures are nice, but prove nothing nor disprove my ability.

You must be a sick animal hoarder with the variety of picks you quickly posted to argue with me, when is one or two reptiles not enough? neck beard get a life...you example of a good setup is flawed, its still all glass and only works for dwarf species. Build them a proper cage and stop giving your opinion where its not needed or welcomed.

Otto,

You’re hopeless. Those are animals I’ve kept over 25 years. I have a building that is strictly for reptiles. Did you see the large enclosures. They’re room sized and designed like zoo exhibits.

So Otto, your enclosure is good for exactly 9 months? Not 10? Again, you know nothing about me. You don’t know anything about my education, my profession, where I’m from, who I am. So quit making assumptions. I’ve made no assumptions about you. Remember what set you off? I simply told you that a humidifier is not needed. That’s all I said and all of the sudden I’m hostile white trash with a neck beard!!! You crack me up.
