do i still even need to feed crickets if im feeding a variety of whole prey?

Doesn’t hurt but doesn’t necessarily help. It’ll keep the guy active if it is interested and you just throw em in there

Roaches I consider a different story than crickets due to the fact they have lots of meat to them.

No, they don’t "have to" eat crickets (crickets are European house crickets Acheta domesticus anyhow and you have an African lizard there). That’s just a readily available and proven food source for small lizards here. You can certainly get a Nile on rat pups, small birds, fish or whatever WHOLE FOOD ITEMS you can find easily and they grow up very well on a variety of things.
