New to the forum! 
Just wanted to post a message and say I’m new to the forum and love what I’ve read so far. I have an 8 month old Sav monitor named "zilla", we bought him from a local reptile breeder at 4 weeks old. He’s now 20" and a little overweight. He’s very easy to handle. But still maintains his macho attitude. He’ll let you pick him up to clean the cage but as soon as you put him back he’ll hiss and tail whip. I have to admit I got a lot of conflicting info from different sources. So it’s been a task trying to give him the best possible care. This has got to be one of the best forums I have visited. After reading some of the info I’m definetly going to change somethings. Tomorrow I’m buying lumber to build a bigger habitat. I’ll tell you what I’ve been doing and I would appreciate any constructive criticism. I custom built his cage It’s 4x2x2. He has a basking light on one side with an ambient temp of 90 degrees. I haven’t purchased a temp gun yet but intend to promptly. I was told newspaper is a sutible substrate, but after reading this forum I’m going to get him some topsoil and playsand. His diet consists of 3-4 hoppers every other day and a mixture of eggs/chicken dusted with Cal and D3. My cricket supply moved out of town so I quit feeding them for awhile. Now he just raises his nose to them and won’t touch them. I’m going to try to chang his eating habits as I would like him to get more insects. I fear all the protien has made him overweight. I have questions about some of the diets though. The breeder I bought him from told me not to feed raw meet or eggs because of samonella. Same with fish. He told me these were not acceptable food sources. Reading this forum makes me think he didn’t really know what he was talking about. If anybody has any tips or pointers I would really appreciate the help. I’ll post some pics when I load them up.

Seems like you have been paying alot of attention to the info provided on this forum. Good job! I’d just try not to remove him from the enclosure or bother him too much when cleaning, but that’s just me. I go out of my way to disturb my sav as little as possible doing cage maintenance.
