 Savnannah enclosure help

I have a baby savannah and I’m looking to build a new enclosure soon. He is currently in one that’s 4 foot long by 2 and a half foot deep by 18 inches high. Its one of those vented enclosures with the sliding glass doors in the front, I don’t know the brand. I have that eco earth stuff as the substrate. I was just wondering what the size anyone who has built their own enclosure uses for a savannah? not the minimum but what actual keepers use. I was also wondering if the commercial foods are an appropriate food for it. He currently eats crickets, roaches, and occasionally pinkies. I have read in a lot of places that pinkies contain too much fat and shouldn’t be fed regularly. Sorry if these questions have been asked a lot I just want to get everything right and not just get all my info from care sheets.

I was also wondering how often crawdads(crayfish) could be fed to it? They are readily available and I’m just curious.

Thank you, the website was very helpful. I still have the question as to how often it could be fed crawdads/crayfish, though? I assume by the website saying that what is natural is best that means commercial monitor diets are not acceptable?

Bump? I have been drawing up some plans for my enclosure for a while and taking a lot of notes from things I have seen on this website. From what I gather 8x4x4 seems good. I will post pics when I start so any advice or criticism would be helpful.

That cage will work but remember bigger is always better. If you can add even as little as one foot to the dimensions it will make a difference. As for the crawfish I don’t know on that, I haven’t tried them with mine yet.

Alright thank you. Yeah I was just asking about the crawdads because they are readily available to me and Rampage really seems to enjoy them.

Bryce,

Crawfish (crayfish) are fine and your Savannah will love it but I wouldn’t offer it as a staple/majority diet. Avoid feeding too much shellfish as I have seen/read bad reactions with it. I fed some abalone to my Savannah just a few weeks back and he ate it of course but let out a big cough right after. Stick with whole prey whatever you do. Avoid processed meats, canned monitor diet, dog/cat food and goldfish. There is a thread here on the first page called ’New upgraded Food post", check that out.

One other question, I have seen some savannah’s that look almost black and then some that are almost an orange/yellow color and many shades between. What affects the color? Just genetics, diet, or lighting? Thank you for all your help.

Colors/patterns can differ with locales.

Lighting doesn’t "change" the color... certain lighting can enhance colors though. Notice colors will more often appear more vibrant with natural sunlight compared to basking floods in an enclosure.

Thank you, I asked because most of the ones at pet stores are very dark in color while a lot I see at expos are much lighter. Rampage is very light, as you can see from the pictures.
