 HELP

My sav Houdini has been healthy until about a week ago he won’t open his eyes but doesn’t seem lethargic he moves often and has eaten a little. I keep the temp on the hot side at 115 and 87 on the cool side.

Ambient of 115 on the warm side? If so, that’d be too warm. You should aim for ambient temps of 75 to 95 and then basking surface temps of 120 +. I’d recommend you get an infered temperature gun if you don’t already have one.

I like your cage!..seems lik you do much more lurking & reading.

Definitely drop those temps on both ends and see how it acts. I know certain uv bulbs can have adverse effects on the eyes but it didn’t look like you had any in your setup so def start with temps. Also i f those are your ambients what are your basking temps?

120+ is good. I’de recommend you do w/e you can to get your cool side down to the mid 70s and hot side to about 90 to 95. Maybe move your bulbs over to one side, or taking the little one out and using a different bulb in place of the red bulb maybe. I’m gonna take a stab and recommend you to try a 50 to 75 watt flood light in a cage that size.

 HELP

I would try to raise the basking spots up higher. I have mine in a glass aquarium too w/ a plywood top and I had to pick my lights up higher and elevate the basking sites to get the temps right. Both my bulbs are floodlamps, hot side is a 50w and the cool side is a 40w and hot side temp is 90 day 86 night, cool side is 78 day 73 night. I have a basking site on both ends of the gradient at hot side 130 and cool side 115 constant surface temps. I had it set up similar to yours but added some driftwood to elevate the basking sites. With sand/soil mix and live plants the humidity stays around 60% and I mist once a day and it elevates to around 70-80% for about 30 minutes.

Is the soil damp enough and the humidity high enough?

It about 75 gallons i think not 100%. Could it be a respitory infection? I had a water dragon a few years back that wouldn’t open his eyes and it turned out to be one.

 HELP

I’ve never had a lizard get a URI,have dealt with tons of snakes,so I don’t know for sure. Can you listen to it breath? If so listen closely for wheezing and a slight popping sound. It sounds more along the lines of dehydration but hard to say to be honest. Before this happened did you notice even a slight change in its habits like hanging in or around the water bowl more often?

Actually, quite the opposite. he seems to avoid it more, the UVB light was also in my water dragons cage repti-sun uvb 5.0, its about a foot long bulb. Is this too much or not enough because there’s a lot of conflicting ideas on monitors and uvb.

There is one bulb in their line that I read was causing a lot of eye issues among other things,I think it was the repti-sun 10.0 though but I’m not 100% sure so don’t quotw me on the bulb type. Personally I don’t use uvb with them I just make sure to dust with multivitamin dust twice a week. You might try replacing it with something else or not use it for a bit,I’ve heard that the eye problem seems to disappear within a few weeks of discontinuing the uv lighting.

Alright I think its a respiratory infection because i held him next to my ear and heard the popping noise that is the tell tale sign of one. I’m going to the vet asap to get him checked out.

Definitely get him to a vet then,as long as its not blowing bubbles and the inside of the mouth isn’t full of thick looking saliva it may still be in early stages which is a plus. Good luck and let us know what the vet says.

He had some saliva in his mouth but the vet said he didn’t think it was a respiratory infection. I got a syringe of baytrill cause making him open his mouth is next to impossible and some solution for his water.

the doctor said the chief bacteria they got was morgana, i think thats how you spell it. He has gotten alot better, but he wouldn’t open his eyes until yesterday and the eye i saw was milky white. Does this mean he’s blind? If so how will he eat? does this mean he won’t be able to survive?
