Well Doug2 there is about 500Lbs of top soil, 200lbs of playsand and 200lbs of cypress mulch under all the leaf litter. Thanks for the advice though.

Eh..

I’d say the minimum size would actually be 6x4x4. It depends on the size of the lizard. Don’t see many 5 foot savannahs.

Varanus_odom Id think that building an 8x4x4 enclosure and ending up with a 36" sav. is way more preferable then building a 6’x4’x4’ enclosure and possibly getting one of those monster 48" savs that now needs a bigger cage. One just cant hope that their sav will grow to just the smaller end of the size spectrum. My guy is pretty active and at 31" uses every inch of his 7’x4’x4’. It is already too small in my opinion.

Jay I agree with everything you said, but there are exceptions. An example would be somebody buying an 8 year old adult at 36 inches. One can safely assume it won’t be growing much more at that point so a 6x4x4 would be adequate. Another would be acquiring a 5yr female, as you can safely assume it won’t exceed 4ft.

I would never recommend building a 6x4x4 for a younger savannah when the keeper has no idea about the sex or length it could reach.

And let’s not forget we are talking minimums here, and it’s best not to think of minimums when building a cage for a monitor. Always make it as big as you possibly can because they’ll utilize every square inch of space you give to it. =)

I’m at work, don’t have access to recent pictures of my adult male so I’ll post a couple i have saved on photobucket. Some are years old.

6-8 months at the earliest and the only way you’ll know for sure (especially at that age) is if by chance you are around when he everts his hemipenes or hemiclitoris - SEARCH for it as there are a million threads on that topic already. Upload a pic of yours, still have not seen one.

8-4-4 is already small for even a 3 ft lizard. Think about all of the land they have to roam in the wild i dont think mimimums shoud be made even smaller

I’ll stand by what I said and 6x4x4 is the minimum for a 3ft adult savannah. Of course it would be bigger IDEALLY but this isn’t ideally this is minimum we’re talking.

Heck, 10x15x20 (hlw) is small when you compare the ’land they roam’ in Africa. I’ll leave it at that, let’s try and stay on topic here.

Why would you come here, and tell people that a smaller enclosure is ok for them? It’s not. 8x4x4 minimum. Any new people lurking around, ignore the "advice" given above. New keeper, he has obviously never raised a varanid to adulthood.
Don’t bother arguing either please, you are new, and are proving now, that you lack a lot of experience, and common sense.

Albigsrule, go kick rocks. Your opinion means as much as mine so cool it kiddo.

I’ll stick with my original statement that a 3ft savannah can be kept in a 6x4x4 minimum. Any new people around here, I’ll say it again - build as large as you can.

Brandon, Scott’s care sheet say 6x3x3 is minimum. Im sue Scott know’s alot more about this species then you. Yes bigger is always better every one knows. But if some one can build a 6x4x4 and cant provide that extra 2 feet. Isn’t it better that some one provides a 6x4x4 cage for a sav then some idiot getting it and putting it in a 20 gallon.

No it’s not better to give it a 6x4x4 cage instead of a 20 gallon because, if you can’t build a 8x4x4, YOU SHOULD NOT BUY A SAV. LizaB2008, sorry this happened on your thread, I am busy this morning but I will try to take some pictures later today. :-)

Terry and Cody, thanks for not flaming this thread any more than it has been. It’s a simple disagreement on minimum cage size, BUT we ALL agree that it should be as big and spacious as is possible for the individual keeper; the bigger the better. AlbigsRule (Brandon) apparently lacks reading comprehension because I clearly stated that the enclosure should be built as big as possible =)

LizaB2008, I’ll upload some more recent pictures for you tonight.

It’s ok, I think the people arguing over cage size on my three is a bit wrong but hey, Oh well, eventually my svannah is going to be big enough to roam the house. I’m having the cage built to fit the hole back wall of my basement which it 12 ft long. The cage will be 12x5x5. It will have 3 lids, and one area that cant be lifted at the basking end I’m having a little door cut into the side that can be opened when tude is big enough to roam, the door will be able to be closed and locked while he is still young and at night when I can’t keep an eye on him. The guy is also cutting tunnels to go in there that can be cover over with dirt.

I a sorry to say this, but I am going to have to agree with AlbigsRule because if you can’t provide the biggest cage possible for any size monitor you shouldn’t get one. Meaning don’t come on here telling people 6x4x4 is OK cause it is not. I would put a ackie monitor in a 10x5x5, it doesn’t matter how small or big the monitor is you should always go big with them.

If we all use your "logic", nobody should have a monitor. You are saying that if somebody can’t provide "the biggest cage possible" they shouldn’t have a monitor and then you go on to say you would put a monitor in a 10x5x5. What the hell do you think I’ve been saying the whole time in this thread? ----BUILD AS BIG AS YOU CAN---- Somehow, I don’t think you’ll understand that - you might need to work on comprehension skills. I’m pretty sure LizaB2008 understands perfectly fine.

Where are all the Savannah monitors

I’m sorry but we all need to stop arguing over cage size, I don’t think I titled this post how big should my cage be, I wanted to see pics of savannah monitors. If I wanted to know how big I should have my cage built I think I’d ask. So lets all stop arguing over something so stupid and get back on topic.

varanus_odom has been saying to build the biggest you can, if thats 6x4x4 then thats what you need to do. I would rather him say that then oh your savannah will be just fine in a 40 long...... wouldn’t you. I mean true that the smallest cage size should be 8x4x4, but not everyone can find a place for something that big in their home. Don’t jump the gun and flip out over something someone said, varanus is completely wrong, only 2 feet off, I mean really, whats two feet??? Stop arguing on my post where I asked to see some monitors and make your own post about how big a cage should be to argue on. Seriously it is soooo disrespectful and I really don’t appreciate it.

What I would appreciate is if some of you grow up and stop arguing over it. As far as I can see, I’m the only new poster on here and I just told you people my cage is going to be 12x5x5, so there is no need to argue I haven’t been misinformed, I’m not going to go out and build a 6x4x4 ok. So stop arguing about it. Seriously, i feel like I’m back in freakin highschool.

Geez, people, all varanus_odom is saying is to build as big as you can. If that is 6x4x4, then so be it. 6x4x4 is an adequate cage and I’m sure all of you have seen monitors keep in "worst" enclosures. And not all of us keep our monitors enclosed in their cages all day. Mine is allowed to romp around the house when we’re home so he uses his cage mainly as his personal den (to bask, sleep, etc.) and I can tell you guys right now that my monitor’s cage is smaller than 6x4x4 although I’m working on getting him a larger enclosure because, YES, they do need all the room they can get!

We all want the best for our monitors. To all of you who are able to provide larger than 6x4x4 enclosures for your buddies, then great! =)

:-) Agreed :-)

The big one was in the middle of a shed in these pictures:

The next ones were when I first got them:

Sorry, these are the same pics I’ve been using for a while, just haven’t had time to take more yet. I can’t believe how big they have gotten though, the little one was like 12" and 135 grams the day I got him. Now, he is just over 16" and like 305-310 grams. I’ll try to take some later. :-)
