Cute! He/she looked alive and energetic. Give him/her more smaller prey. Easier on them to digest, and swallow. Start breeding some roaches, he/she will LOVE them. Can you post an enclosure shot?

Thanks albig, yeah he’ll eat almost two dozen large crickets in addition to a fuzzy/hopper in one feeding session. I fed the hopper because the fuzzy mice at the source I *was* getting from looked in horrible health. I’ve since found a better source close by my home. Soon I’ll be ordering online but I haven’t found good enough deals yet and shipping is usually costly.

He’s in a 50gal tank, nothing special at the moment. Haven’t kept a monitor in a tank since I had a 120gal about 5years ago when my Savannah was a hatchling. Not a fan of them at all; I’ve had to modify the top and put every square inch of space to good use for it to be even temporarily acceptable. Lots of hides, a 50w flood and a 10.0 tube that doesn’t do much. He’ll be moving into a 5’x2.5’x2.5’ in two weeks so he’ll be fine.

I’ll post updates in this thread.

Yeah, he’s cute, but I don’t like to see prey tortured like that. Gives the hobby a bad name IMO
If you’re going to feed him fresh, oversized prey, you could at least knock it on the head first.
There are too many disgusting live feeding vids on youtube as it is already, no need to add to them.

Thanks. He’s actually pretty darn calm besides feeding, that video was the first time I saw an intense feeding response from him. The only time (so far) he’s opened his mouth at me was after I tong fed him some crickets and then I put my hand next to his head and he sniffed my arm for a while and climbed up on my forearm opened his mouth but right before he chomped he stopped and just gave me the look before rubbing his mouth against my hairy arm. He’s been climbing up my arm when I put it in the cage. Much different monitor personality than I’ve ever dealt with personally and seems to be calming down quickly. He doesn’t scuttle off into a hide when I open the top on his cage anymore.

Sounds like you’ve got yourself a winner there. I can’t speak highly enough about them as far as rewarding species to keep, but I’m sure everyone feels the same about their favorites.
My big male tried to climb on me today, but it’s not so easy to hold them when they’re almost 6’ and weigh a ton! Hope you have a room designated for yours?)

Week 2 is up. He isn’t interested in pinkies for reasons I don’t know. Maybe not lively enough for him. Anyhow, he’s growing strong eating good. Temperament is still excellent. He’s starting to shed.

In the process of ordering quail in bulk. Also will note that I’ve been slipping him fresh sea bass, catfish on one occasion and freshwater shrimp. The only food he’s refused so far: pinky and fuzzy mice (no idea why), and surf smelt.

Update: I tried the transillumination sexing deal on the White throat last night and although his tail is getting nice and plump - I did not see anything resembling hemipenes. No dots, no shadows/shapes. Could definitely be a female and it would be my first as a keeper. Yikes! =)

some updated pictures

He’s doing very well, growing incredibly fast. 17" ten days ago to 20" yesterday. Got a great deal on a 4.5x2x2 enclosure because it was missing pieces and needed to be assembled and had no lighting. I installed two fixtures inside the enclosure on timers. Only one flood is on in these pictures. Substrate is a nursery mix. Holds in proper humidity and temp levels very well. Going to need something a lot bigger very soon though =)
