 More Argus Hatching

Yes, it’s been 29 days since the last clutch, but here are more babies hatching. These eggs were on my top shelf (hotter incubation at like 86-87*F vs 84-85*F) and are hatching out a couple weeks early vs. the last couple clutches. Holy Shnikey’s!!! They are so cute!

Well done!

I see that your eggs get that same coating of fungus that mine do, judging by the second photo, unless it’s just the photo?

David - I believe that is just fine perlite "dust" on the eggs, but I’ll check. A lot of my eggs have that dust on them from the finer perlite bits that I don’t brush off.

The Flavi’s had a hiccup (one murdered by another), but the other two are growing like mad. They were all 3 identically sized, but one was found with a mashed neck/throat injury last week. I’m not sure what to make of that as I’ve never had any monitors do that and food/cage size is very good. But if one doesn’t like another, look out in monitor lizards. You can’t get them far enough apart with an entire home’s square footage! I can only hope the two left are 1.1, but it’s still hard to tell. I can’t make out any form of hemipenal bulges on either one, but they are only 4 months old and I would not expect them to yet anyhow. I’d be OK with them turning out 0.2 as I can secure a confirmed male V. flavirufus if needed.

Perlite dust was the other thing I had thought it may be, but either way the egg has that vaguely soft focus look that my eggs get. I worried about it with my first clutch, but it’s never affected any of the eggs. I think it may be a residue from the nesting substrate that the fungus is using to grow on.

Good job on the eggs. I hate to hear about your flavi. Hopefully the remaining ones will be a pair.

They are very nice looking argus. Man i wish i had the room right now :(. Thats sad to hear about the flavi. The last reptile show i was at a guy had about 30 baby savs in this little container and threw probably 200 crickets in and the one sav killed the other. Worst part was the guy was laughing.

Yes, the eggs do get sort of a hazy, translucent look to them right before hatching David. I’ve noticed that also as it gives the appearance of really focusing in on the lizard’s head on the pic, but it’s really just the egg becoming "velvet" on the surface. The white stuff is just perlite, and not a fungus. I felt it on my hand today out of curiosity. Two heads out, 6 dented eggs looking ready to pip.

That’s what I was referring to - not the large visible particles. Is that velvety appearance the dust or something else? The fungus I am talking about presents itself as a very fine velvety coating on the eggs. There’s a vaguely musty smell that goes with it which is clearly fungal in origin.

Oh, I thought you meant the rough white stuff - that’s perlite. It very well could be a tiny layer of something fungal as the eggs shed water down the stretch. That may be the trigger for it to grow well and there is an odd odor. I just assumed the egg surface changes or something as the shells get a different appearance. Good observation. I bet you are correct.

How many Argus have you produced this year? You are a machine. Well, your female(s) are.

Congrats Krusty! Perhaps you and Shay could swap argus and widen the gene pool a bit.

I have an unrelated female for my ’extra’ male. I just don’t post pics of every lizard with a story here. All these eggs have come from one girl over the last year and a half! I think there have been like 40 hatched and another 18 cooking, but i’d have to count. She is a machine! This pair has been a real joy to work with and making it look easy.
