It has been just over 3 months now since bringing home my Sav. Can’t believe he has changed so much. Sorry the photos are not that great.. he really dislikes the camera much less ME invading his space. First photo is about 3 days after I got him and others are from today.

Maybe down the road when this one is older and I know for sure if he is indeed a he ha ha. Then I *might* consider getting another of the opposite gender. Right now though I am just focusing on raising this one as healthy as possible. I just don’t want to get in over my head and want to go slow and know what I am doing first know what I mean?

By the way that pink in the photo is from my very first litter of of ASF rat pups!!

Well until the mother of those pinks escaped today they have been super easy to care for. These had NEVER been handled when I got them. By the end of the first day the male had become pet tame. I can walk around with him on my shoulder if want to and to think I chose them because they were not supposed to be sweet that way I would not get attached. I got 12 pinks from the frist time mom as well. Would have been nice to see what later litters would have numbered but that is not looking likely with 4 cats in the house. However I do still have 1.2 and believe both are pg as of right now.

They don’t smell like other rats either. I change out the bedding once a week or so toss in food pellets and water some times fresh veggies and they are good to go!

As I told the husband I am just glad it was not the male that escaped! As that would have cost me more money and I admit it heart break as I seem to have become attached to him.

They are really easy though to keep. A plastic rubbermaid is all you really need as a "tank". Food and water and you are set. Be warned though many people speak of them being aggressive... though that has not been my experience.

I keep just the monitor and ASF rats right now. I found the escaped one last night safe and sound. She even earned herself a name "Bad Wolf" as I was was watching Dr. Who and she ran out and into my sound sound subwoofer!
I also have my 3 rescue cats and one Sphynx (hairless) cat. I bred and showed Persians cats for many many years but stopped had to stop for ethical reasons as well as having had a child that takes up a lot of my time.

I am hopping to expand my collection of reptiles in the next few years though as I have found that they are where my true interest lays these days. I would like to add a Hognose snake and an Asian Vine snake at the very least. If all goes well with my Sav maybe a mate for him and in Dream land maybe years form now a pair of those Green tree monitors as they are stunning but way out of my experience level.

What a beauty. I’m new to the Sav world, mine is about as large as yours right now and eating like crazy. These are such cool "little" critters. If yours is any indication I think mine is doing well too. I like your use of dirt, is it from a shop or did you dig it out of the yard?

I actually got the dirt from wal mart. Sadly I live in GA where there seems to be nothing but RED CLAY! Horrible stuff!
