 Going out of town

What do you guys do with your monitors and other reptiles when you have to leave for a couple days? I’ll only actually be gone for about a day and a half, and unfortunately I don’t have anybody trustworthy I can get to come in and look after my herps. I used to overfeed all my reptiles before I would leave, but I recall a discussion a while back that suggested laying off the food a day or two in advance and lowering temps and was just wondering what you guys would suggest I do.

A day and a half? I’d do nothing.

Seems like a perfectly valid question to me, Geezle.

That is a good questions.

I would say they would be fine for that time period.

Seems like a great question to me. Even though you will only be gone a short time the answers might help others who would be gone longer. Can’t imagine it is easy to find a pet sitter that is willing or that you would trust to care for you monitors though.

So say I was going to leave for 3 or 4 days...would I be looking at doing anything different in that case?

 Going out of town

My wife and I went on vacation in July and were gone for nearly a week. I simply turned off the timers regulating the light cycles and made sure they had fresh water. I had our housesitter check my lizards daily, but she never saw them. I think they just went down into their burrows and never, or rarely, came out. It is rather warm in my varanid room, so I was not concerned about temperatures. As soon as I get home, I turned the timers and lights back on and they came out.

The Argus were quite hungry, but they are always are! I’m sure they would be fine like this up to about two weeks, but I wouldn’t push it past that time limit. Others may have and had fine experiences. Some species hunker down in the wild when they "find" environmental conditions unfavorable and the time lengths vary considerably. Some even exhibit seasonal inactivity, so our species in captivity presumably "treat" such an event as a natural event.

They may be fine for a month, but for anything over 10 days I’d just have someone check, feed, and water them daily.

pull the plug so there is no lighting, no basking. be sure the ambient does not go below 75 and the lizards will wait it out. This is ok for week long trips without a problem. I have doen this numerous times with my animals.
honestly, for 1.5 days I would do nothing.
