Don’t know what to title it?

I was wondering if ackies are anything like other lizards/snakes in that males can’t be kept with other males? Anything I’ve read hasn’t mentioned the issue and I was wondering if they’d fight?

I have a trio raised from babies with 3 males never fighting.

Yeah I was thinking of building a 5 or 6 by 2-3 by 7 and get either some ackies or some timors or just one arboreal varanid. Any ideas?

Would you like a shy monitor or a monitor that is out and roaming around alot. If you want a monitor you will see alot go with the ackies.

I wouldn’t mind one that hides like a timor, but I prefer an active one...

Ackies may fight, they may not. The two males in my present trio fought until they were separated. The more animals you have in a space, the more you increase the potential for agonistic interactions.

Timor monitors are actually quite active, some just avoid humans when they are present. We may perceive they are inactive, but they are actually being quite active and responsive, i.e. hiding or retreating from your presence.

Of the two Timor monitors I have, one is constantly out and about and does not shy away from me, unless I get within inches of it. I believe this is due to its ability to clamber up branches until it is at my eye level or above. It feels secure and therefore responds accordingly. The other Timor is rather reclusive except in the morning and evening. It is still active, basking in various hidden spots, but I don’t see it all the time.

I would suggest getting a trio of Ackies or other Odatria and just watching them carefully.

I think I am just going to research more and find what species best suits me. I am not rushing and still need to build the cage... I am leaning toward a more arboreal monitor, either timor, blue-tail, peach-throat, yellow, or mangrove...

I think you named a bunch of wild-caught species that are nervous and will not be in as good health as if you went with CBB Ackies. Plus, Ackies are more fun to keep than nervous monitors that bolt at the sight of you. Even V. tristis (aka Blackheaded monitors) are CBB and arboreal, but they can be skittish also.

Do you think a pair of timors would be okay in a 5x3x7? I think it is between those and ackies... It is hard to decide.

Honestly go for the ackies buy 2 or 3 of them and put that cage on its side and make it 7x3x5 (lxwxh)

I can’t fit a 7x3x5. I can fit max a 5x3x7. Probably closer to 4x3x7, so a more arboreal monitor would probably be better, if not just one ackie.

The Ackies would use the height. Seven feet hardly meets the needs of an arboreal species. As soon as we as keepers start creating 20-30 foot high enclsoures, we are building arboreal enclosures, maybe. I have some Timors in a six foot high enclosure and that is not very high at all. The Ackies would use the height, but would spend much more time on the ground. Get some Ackies, you’ll love them.

I guess then I’ll do that... I didn’t think they’d use the space, but since they would. I would just give them deeper dirt... Is four feet too much for substrate?
