 Curving tail question

Does anyone know exactly why the crests of the tails of certain monitors start to curve back and forth as opposed to remaining straight? Just curious.

I know what you mean. The crest of the tail towards the middle and end of the tail starts to make "waves" almost. I’ve only notice that in my large nile.I dont think I’ve notice that in the young waters I have though.

 Curving tail question

I mean when a permanent zig-zagging formation occurs on the crest of the tail, as opposed to the top of the tail being completely straight as in most water loving species of monitor. This does not apply to monitor with rounded tails (argus, tree monitors etc.) rather species with tapered tails (water monitor, mangroves, etc.). I’m curious to know if it is a health issue or just a random occurrence.

I’ve seen this in some large water monitors, so hopefully someone has some insight.

Sort of like kinks in the ridge? I’ve seen it before but have no idea how it is formed.

Good question.

Just a random shot in the dark here but seeing as you said you see it in water loving monitors might it be an adaption that helps them to move more easily through the water?

I believe komodo Dragons do it as well. It is caused by the monitor wobbling when it walks. My Ornate monitors tail does that one second, and the next it goes straight.

No I think he means when a monitor has permanently "kinked" tail or crest.

Chris, perhaps it’s just a calcium deficiency?
