 Big Eggs = Big Babies

This (small) female Argus I have, laid her first fertile clutch at the beginning of February, and they were huge eggs averaging about 70 grams each. During the course of incubation they grew quite a bit as they absorbed water. One egg was up to 113 grams at the 4 month mark. The final two months they gradually lost water weight to the point where the eggs where denting in.

At 187 days The first head popped out, and the other three the following day.

After spending over 30 hrs with their heads poking out, they finally emerged. These are really big babies that range from 58-62 grams.
This one has nice symmetry

Here’s the exposed belly button shot

cheers

Congrats Shay! Well done! That’s interesting just how much water they absorb, nice work with the month by month weighings. How have subsequent clutches compared to her first in intial egg weight and clutch size? Cheers, Lance

Even though I’ve been keeping monitors for a decade now, I’ve only been trying to breed for the past few years. My first pair was not compatible and the female almost killed my male. So this is really my first good pair and the first monitors I’ve hatched
I say they’re big because I have data of other hatchlings.
the eggs and hatchlings from this female are a good 50% larger than average.

Thanks Lance. The other eggs are following suit. It’s interesting that when the eggs dent towards the end of incubation, they’re a good 25 grams heavier than they were when they were laid. Seems the eggs shell isn’t very elastic. When they grow, the shell stretches, and when they begin to lose water weight, the shell can do nothing but dent in.

The eggs have gotten bigger with each clutch and more numerous as well. It’s amazing. She recently laid a 78 gram egg. wow.

That is one pudgy hatchling! His umbilicus is gonna burst (kidding). I guess the eggs have more yolk food than average. What’s the SVL and TL of the hatchlings to compare to those 12 I hatched and posted here in January? All of my ensuing clutches have been pretty similar to that data, so I haven’t posted it again and again. I would guess they would be the same sized lizards by length and yours are just heavier in this clutch from absorbing more food before hatching. I’d also expect yours to not eat for a bit longer as they’ve got the reserves on them already. Keep track of this data too please as I’m interested if it’s different. My hatchlings go from 3-6 days before eating most of the time. Then it’s "look out! We’re Argus and we eat". LOL

Congratulations again Shay! It’s a pretty special thing to hatch monitors.

Are you saying you’ve received a 17 egg clutch from an Argus? Any pics of the eggs? The most I’ve ever heard of was 14 by Jim Alles (ReptileGuru) back like 3 years ago and he even said that was an insane # of eggs vs the many clutches he’s hatched out over the years. I had 12 last year and the female looked as if she was going to rip at the seams. 17 is a gigantic clutch for the species and I’d love to see the eggs photgraphed if you have them for my data I keep. Thanks.

you know this was 3 years ago i have some pics of hatchlings that’s about it.You can contact chad aka albigcrazy on this forum i know him personally and he might remember me talking about that.i believe i hatched 14 out of that clutch i allso think shes gave me a clutch of 14 also. She was a big female and healthy to i got around 5 clutches in 8 months. She is now at a local reptile shop where she still is dropping eggs monthly in a not so good cage low basking temps nest box which is sad but she must have laid at least 12 clutches by now.

I was comparing the data you (Justin) and Lance sent me and as you said, they’re close in length, but these are a little bit longer
#1. 58 grams 13.5cm SVL 31.5cm TL
#2. infertile
#3. 62 grams 14 cm SVL 32cm TL
#4. 58 grams 13.5cm SVL 32.5cm TL
#5. 58 grams 13.5cm SVL 32.5cm TL

Mike, there were only 5 eggs in this clutch and 4 of those were good. The next two clutches were 8 eggs, and the most recent is 9 eggs. I’d like to point out that even in the large clutches of 8-9, the eggs are huge. The combined weight of 8 eggs from this girl was about the same weight as the 12 eggs that Justin received early this year. This female laid 636 grams worth of eggs in her most recent clutch, the biggest yet.

17eggs? Wow

here ya go Reedie

Congratulations on the argus hatchlings, Shay.

Those babies are alot bigger than mine were in June. Mine were only 10 to 10.5 inches total length and around 40 grams. My eggs started pipping at 175 days.

Thanks Ed. I guess in these huge eggs they have a bit more room to grow.
For my own data collection, do you mind sending me the weight and lengths of all your hatchlings?
cheers
