 I was thinking

Depends on your experience level. Monitors are very hard to keep. They have a lot of needs that many people cant keep up. A water monitor may not be the best animal to start w/ when entering the monitor world. If you are willing to listen and is willing to put out money to take care of one then it may be something to really do research on and think about.SERIOUSLY!!!Do pros and cons on some types of monitors. Best monitor would ACKIES and possibly some other smaller monitors. The ackies would be ALL captive bred babies and some of the other species but they are harder to find. When you look at water monitor, majority of them are Not captive bred animal.
This is a good start for you, coming in here before you go and buy an animal. Many people come in here right after they buy something and ask the same questions.."why isnt my animal eating?"...etc.

Just think of all the questions you may have and feel free to ask.Look through many of the threads as well to answer some of your questions too.

So what do you mean your a good "reptile keeper"? What exactly have you kept to make you think you are ready or capable of keeping a water monitor or any varanid whatsoever?

That will scare most beginners away from a water. Lol a water is probally going to be too big for you. What have you actually kept before it may help people decide what your experianced enough to have as care goes any ways. Even after you figure out what you want do a ton of research. I did mine for over a year to make sure i was going to have everything right. I started with a savannah monitor. They get aroung 3 1/2 feet to 4 typically. If you have the space and money they are actually pretty good. Many people talk bad on them as they are cheap and alot of people go buy them and kill them. But with the right care they seem to be fun lizards. Ackies are good monitors if you want something 2-3 feet long and they are pretty neat. They are pretty expensive compared to alot of the common monitors but will be cheaper in the long run. What ever you decied on do your research. I would strongly advise to not get a water, nile , and most definately a croc monitor. due to size or the aggression. Believe me. would you rather have a pissed off 4 foot monitor or an 8 foot? they can do some serious damage. my baby savannah scratches my arms when i have the feeding tongs out so imagine an 8 foot water.

When doing your research figure out exactly how much it will need to eat in a month and start putting that much in savings as a food budget. Foods add up quickly
