 Best first monitor

i built a tank that is 4 1/2 feet high, 3 1/2 feet wide, 2 1/2 feet deep what would be the best monitor to place in this enclosure for at least a year or two or until it grows out of it? i ideally want one that would be the most interactive and docile? please post pics of yours and give some information if possible. how much do the run as far as upkeep too?

if this is your first monitor go with some dwarfs because no monitor beside those will be able to live in that cage for even a year.

go with ackies, caudo/gilleni crosses , and a few others there gonna be easy to keep because of there size 14 in to 30 in and eat smaller food items like crickets, super worms, roaches, pinkies and small mice.
with almost all baby species you need to feed them every to every other day.

most other species get 3 to 6.5 feet and need large cages to properly cage them and they will cost you a a lot more then drafts

ps look though the forum you will be able to find any of your questions including other info you need on them

And Ackies (Varanus acanthurus) are the least expensive and most readily available monitor out there that’s a dwarf. They also happen to be a blast to keep! Lots of personality and not too shy.

would go with ackies or timors if you want them to be good in that cage for a year. I also think a savannah monitor is a good starter monitor if you have the time and money. The thing is if you buy an ackie they are 99% captive bred because its illegal to export them from austrelia. Thats the reason they are pretty expensive compared to a savannah monitor that only cost 15 dollars. A savannah monitor is going to get alot bigger and cost more in the long run but if you have the time and the right care they are a great monitor.I personally started with a savannah monitor because i had room for a large cage and wanted something in the 4 foot range. Dont go with something you cant handle yet even tho its hard sometimes. I really wanted a water but i knew i couldnt make a 12 foot cage in the house in at right now so sometime in like 5 years i will get one but for now ill just stick to my savannah

There are also lots of V. tristis now here in Ont. Canada. I read price is half now compared to a few yrs. ago. I like the V. tristis tristis personally. But still, tristis is double the price compared to an ackie.

Well not every savannah will be only 2 feet in the first year. It could be 1 foot or 3 possibly so theres no guarantee

Bsm: Aren’t caudos like 2 grand? Why would you recommend such an expensive lizard to someone with no monitor experience?

Okay, I got one today!! A V. Tristis about 9-10" TL. It’s still a young baby though, but like a "real" monitor. As I’m typing I can see it roaming in its tank, flicking its tongue alot, and it’s tolerating the handling. Doesn’t bite even if you push your finger to its mouth as demonstrated by the pet shop guy.

And yeah, handling it too much is not my intention. It’s a CB too. It’s just like any lizard.. the way it’s doing its thing. I try to watch for "stress" signs if any, for as any pet this is what has to be avoided.

It has UV right now and a heat bulb, plus thermo. It’s my first monitor as a pet, but where I came from we have water monitors, even served as delicacy . Before this I was into aquaria yrs. ago and had 2 Red Asian Arowana. I paid $675 Can. for the tristis by the way.

CB baby Kimberly V. Glauerti might run if ever, at around $1500 -$2000 each. same might go with the V. Jobiensis once the petshop gets hold of them.

Thiefgarrett: Very jealous of the Asian Arrowana. They are illegal here, and all we can keep are the blacks, silvers, and Australians.

the crosses are 250 to 300 as i hear but i would never buy a pure cuado because i could probably only get 1 if i saved up and i doubt it would be fun with a single one instead of a group.

BSM,

You’re correct, the crosses are about $250.

I bought 5 of them just to check them out. I must admit that I really, really like them. They are absolutely bullet proof and a riot to watch. They’re also fearless. You can keep a group in a small enclosure and they won’t eat you our of house and home. As a pet goes, I’d recommend them over an Ackie.
