 I haven’t updated in a year, so.....

Here they are!!!

Any ideas on sex?

Here’s lizard #1

And #2

.... and the victims.

Feeding video.

These guys have been AMAZING!!! At the moment, they are living in a 7x3x4 enclosure with almost no furniture, because they destroyed it all on the first day. Looks like I’m going to have to get some logs, haha. I probably need more dirt in there too, as there is only about a foot in there.

Anyway, suggestions are welcome(my cage needs more work), and thanks to those who have helped me over the past year and a half.

I’m bumping this up, but had a question too. Are all the ’victims’ roaches? Your guys look a bit on the lean side with a lot of loose skin. Just wondering what else and how much you’re feeding?

That’s actually what they SHOULD look like! Everyone else keeps them so fat and undermetabolized that their skin is tense and the lizards die prematurely.

Well in that case, it’s about time someone posted pictures of how they should look! As most pictures don’t look like that.
Although, I did think their tails looked nice and plump and that’s where the fat should be, rather than on the body.

Lately, that’s what it’s been like. I used to feed them more mice than anything else, but I’m trying to move onto a more insect-based diet. Anyway, I do still feed them mice, shrimp, and other assorted bugs that are big enough to catch their interest.

Well as Krusty said, they’re supposed to look that way, but I’m just not used to seeing pictures of captives posted, that look like that. Hey, but if that’s better for them to look that way and we’re all just keeping them ’fat’ because we think we’re doing the right thing, I wish more people would post pictures of ’healthier’ monitors to send the right message. To tell you the truth, I almost didn’t recognize them as Savs because all the one’s I see are round, fat and don’t have that long body look yours do.
I may have to put my guys on a diet now!

Susan, you have Daniel Bennet’s Sav book, correct? Most of the savs in that book (from the wild) are in near tip-top shape, minus the ticks.

Dean, they look EXCELLENT! And I’m thrilled to see them in the cage, finally ;P. I recently put Rex in a new cage as well. I need to get pictures of it now.

Nice monitors OwnzOr, half the problem with Savs is they look better overweight & they are more likely to stay where you want them, on your shoulder in your pocket etc.

Reed, yes the wild ones do look just like the ones posted. If you consider the, however many square miles territory they have in the wild, it’s understandable, but this guy deserves a medal for being able to duplicate that in captivity! Again, anyone with monitors, esp’ adult savs that look like this, please post pictures.
mdf- I have a confession- you said savs look better overweight? I prefer the long bodied monitors like Argus etc’ and have never been a big fan of Savs due to their round stocky appearance, but these guys don’t look like that. This has been a wake up call!

Susan.

Yes Susan, Dean’s animals do look great. The diet he feeds them is a pretty big factor in the way they have turned out. In fact, he and Chad are what got me started on my insect-based diet theory/thing.

Now I’m trying to figure out if theres a way for me to see how Robyn from PE’s bosc breeding project is going...sure wished I lived in Colorado right now.

Congrats on the enclosure and the healthy looking savs. This is a first! I’m so used to seeing beachballs-in-the-bathtub shots that this was a real surprise.

Feeding Response Vid

I thought the ending was hilarious. He thinks he can fly or something. I think that with enough practice, he’ll be able to do it, lol.

Ha ha ha Dean, Rex will do that too. It’s nothing though, Blackjack will have his entire body off the ground for the tiniest morsel of food. Hungry beast!

Is it ok to have 2 savannah monitors is a cage that size? I don’t know how big a cage would need to be for more than one.
