Yes, my Reptiles are kept in my garage. Yes again, sliding doors. Looking forward to seeing your Timor setup! Ed I do believe they are presure treated. (a story on this at the end of my post) Weidjd Wieght=unkown (very heavy!) In total the enclosure measures, 6’L, 3’W, 6’H. 4’ is terrestrial, 2’ subterranian. Scott I have 8 children...so the thought has crossed my mind! In these thoughts the glass is the ONLY weak spot! LOL! Now for the story. This design has been in my head for a while! The treated part had me put back a bit. I desided to go with plywood, I went and picked up all of my material. On the short ride home I couldn’t take the smell! So I turned around and went back and bought the timbers, they smell great! I didn’t have to open my windows just to breath. So I figured that plywood is treated as well, perhaps a bit differently...I really don’t know. I have used both plywood to build cages and landscaping timbers IN enclosures both with no problems. I’ll have to hope everything will be fine. Thanks again to all! Mike |

Here is a little bit about pressure treated lumber. In the pressure-treating process, lumber is sealed in a tank, and air is extracted, creating a vacuum. Then a solution containing chromium, copper, and arsenic is added. Because of the vacuum, the chemicals are carried deep into the wood. Chromium is a bactericide, copper a fungicide, and arsenic an insecticide, and all arrest decay of some kind. All three are toxic, but chromium and copper don’t raise many concerns. If we don’t inhale it, chromium is not particularly harmful to us, and copper isn’t very toxic to mammals, although it is to aquatic life and fungi. It’s arsenic that is worrisome. After all that I will say I have never tried it out myself. So (guinea pig) looks like you can let me know if I was worried for good reason or not. Oh and the smell of plywood, yes indeed you are correct but it does gas off with time. |

Guinea pig, well I hope I can report good news Brother! These timbers were presure treated with Akaline copper quartermary, no arsenic at all! That makes me feel a bit better, but what is quartermary? All of my little work horses (roly poly’s, centepedes, and millepedes) are alive and doing fine. There was some mold growing on a few of the timbers before I washed each one. Like I said even plywood is treated and I have used both with no ill effects. I have never used timbers to this extent, so time will tell. Alot of pond places use these same timbers for above ground Koi ponds. Mike P.S. Great looking dog! My English Bulldog Nunzio would love to share his skateboard! LOL
How about the dog food scare, better be carefull. Nunzio only eats Nitro Natural Choice large breed adult. |

The above ground koi ponds are lined with pond liner so the exposure to wood is minimal if at all. Yeah I watched the local pet stores franticaly pull dog food off the shelves. I am usually telling everyone they worry to much, for some reason I have had my worries about treated lumber. I hope it works out well for you. Keep us posted so we can all steal (borrow) your idea. |
