I like to use aspen bedding for my milks. They love to burrow so it makes it easy for them to do that. I also don’t have to worry about humidity with them, they all shed great, so i don’t have to worry about misting. you can’t mist aspen cause it will mold.

I have Black Milk Snakes,(Lampropeltis triangulum gaigeae), which I have to admit are not your typical Milk snake. But they love to burrow and I give them 2" to 5" of hardwood mulch to make their tunnels in, depending on their size. I have a 50" male and a 28" female. The mulch I use is naturally aged hardwood mulch with no artificial coloring. I have not had any problems with mold/fungi.
They seem to love it and I like the idea of giving them "room" to dig and explore and make/remake their own tunnels each time I renew their terrarium.
If you go to You tube and search for Black Milk Snake, you will see a video of my setup. Look for "Nina and Onyx"

how would the substrate Carefresh work with milksnakes? I was planning on getting a corn snake, but now im not so sure, and have the tank set up with Carefresh. One more question, are milk snakes arboel?

it should be fine since its paper based and loose. they aren’t arboreal, they are terrestrial. arboreal means that they live primarily in the trees, but they stay on the ground.
