Hi! noob here needs advice with sinaloan lol
i just bought a sinaloan milk snake yesterday, it is about 1 year old. i dunno if it is male or female though... is there any visible differences between males and females? I’d like to know wich sex it is without using a probe... also, can you tell my how i can control the humidity and temperature? i have a heating pad (i dunno if im using it correctly though... any advice would be deeply apreciated), but the temperature is still marking 71 or 72º F. and, when i first inserted the hygrometer, the humidity was at 55% but after a while it as rise up to about 78%. my thermometers and hygrometer are cheap ones though... another thing I’d like to know is about feeding it, I’m gonna feed it this Sunday, and I’ve read over the Internet that it is best to feed it out of the tank, is it true? if so, after she’s eaten, how much time do i have to wait till i can grab it again and put it back on the tank? and one last think... today I’ve handled it for about 2 or 3 minutes and i did it about 5 times (lol its just awesome :D) anyway, my question is, how many times, and for how long can i handle it without it being bad for the snake? by the way, the first times i tried to pick it up, it was very scared and quickly tried to escape, so i let it go, but after i got it on my hands for the first time, it calmed down alot, it musked on me just a little bit, but i know that’s perfectly natural, she didn’t try to byte me at all :D hope you guys can give me some good tips. ;) i want my snake to be healthy, and what I’m most worried about is the low temperature and the high humidity... all the help will be deeply appreciated. waiting for replies. :) here it is :D i know, her habitat is not one of the best as of yet, but I’m gonna get it better and better with time. :) |

i’ve put the tank close to a window, where it receives sunlight. this made the tank heat considerably. my question is, is there any problem with doing this? is it bad for the snake? im doing this just as a quick solution to heat the tank, so that when it eats tomorrow, the temperature will be good for it’s digestion... any advice? |

Right now it’s going to sound like heresy, but I have all of my baby corn snakes sitting on top of my on-demand cable TV box, and they’re thriving. There’s plenty of thick substrate so they can either burrow down or stay up on top to themo-regulate. I don’t have any Sinaloans right now, but I do have two Nelson’s; they’re quite hardy with excellent appetites . . . The first snake I bought years ago was a Sinaloan, and the herp shop lady said I would probably be just fine with a heating pad, and I’m still using it on a yearling gopher in a ten-gallon tank . . . If you’re going to keep it that warm, make sure it has plenty of water, and seriously, unlike lizards, snakes don’t have an special light requirements. And I wouldn’t necessarily worry about feeding it tomorrow. The advice about letting it settle into its new surroundings for a week or so is sound (cold-blooded critters like snakes don’t need to eat nearly as often as we warm-blooded sorts). I feed all of my snakes outside the cage, something I think is sound, except I’ll occasionally give my big milk a pinky from hand (he takes it ever so gently) if one of the other snakes has demonstrated it wasn’t hungry. |
