 Getting me a Black Milk

Hey everyone, since I’m a proud papa of a Florida King sire(Maliki)and a Goini dam(Nagainia) I have had a lot of success w/Kings .But now my neighbor had given me a 40L gallon tank and I decided to get the snake that I fell in love with at a show, besides the Eastern King,...BLACK MILKSNAKE.">

Nagainia

Guys I need your help .I intend on getting a yearling Black in tricolor juvenile so when it sheds I can watch it turn to Black.IS A 40L ENCLOSURE GOOD ENOUGH TO HOLD THIS BEAUTY?And can a sire and a dam can be in the same cage .Reason speaking if its all good ,I would love to breed them.I live in MIAMI where it’s at least 85-90F nearly year round.Your input would be appreciated on the proper care of them since I cant get a EASTERN INDIGO...

 Getting me a Black Milk

I have 3 black milks myself and there are other black milk owners on this board too. From the limited info I have on them and to keep it brief, no you should not keep the two together unless its breeding season (then you can but keep a very watchful eye on them). Milk snakes do eat other snakes and you do not want to lose one if something should happen. Keep them very well fed during the time they are together. Once breeding is complete, separate them again into their own cages. Also make sure to keep these snakes at cooler temps. Very high 60’s to mid 70’s. Anything over that and you will most likely have problems. Pretty much keep them at comfortable room temps and you should be good to go. No additional heat source needed for them. Again I am no expert here and I have not bred my guys yet, but from what I have gathered online myself as far as care and info, this seems to be the consensus that they should not be kept together even if they are opposite sex for overly long periods of time unsupervised.

PS: I feel your Eastern Indigo pain brother

I have two Blacks, a 4.5’ male and a 2’ female. I agree w/ Lovin2act, it wouldn’t be a good idea to keep them together. They are naturally solitary in the wild, only coming together to breed.
Also, since you live in Florida where it stays warm/hot,(I’m in Texas), you may want to consider setting up one room in your house as the "Black’s Room" and purchasing a window A/C unit for that room in order to keep them at the recommended temperature. This is what we ended up doing after we realized how much it costs to cool the whole house down to the mid 70’s F!
And as to your question about the 40 Gal. long aquarium, it should be plenty big enough. Just make sure it has a place to hide under during the daytime if it wants too. Also, they like to burrow so I would recommend at least 1 1/2" to 2" of bedding for it to burrow in. You can increase the depth of the bedding as the snake gets larger. I have about 6" in the males terrarium. I use a native hardwood mulch and both of mine seem to love it. I’ll down load a photo of my set up and post it for you. The larger male is in a 75 Gal. and the smaller female is in a 55 Gal. with more than enough room.

Here is a photo of my current set up for my Black Milk Snakes. You can see our male, "Onyx" in the "pond" of his terrarium. "Nina" our female hid under her bark before I could get the photo snapped.

Russell55 thats way awesome the Onyx uses his pond!!! My guys dont seem to fond of water except for grabbin a drink now and then. My new guy gets delivered this morning, he is younger than my other two (about 3 feet and not quite jet black) but he will eventually be my big boy as he comes from San Antonio stock and both parents were over 6 feet :-) I named him Ashur (Hebrew meaning for black) to go along with my other male named Jet, and my girl Ebony.
