 Smelly Cage

Were not use to having adult Geckos and we just got them last night. Well they were using the sand in their previous cage but we only have the carpet. Should we get the sand again to cut down on the urine smell?

It smells like a cat litter box! What can we get to decorate the tank that isnt too expensive? Plants real/fake? We already have the gutt loading powder, do we still need to get the calcium powder as well? Also, I never see them drinking water.

Do Geckos actually drink the water lol? These two like to look up at us when we are talking to them. Its so cute how they raise their heads up when they see us :O)

no, don’t bother with sand. it also smells like a cat litter box, and you’re going to get about a million people on here telling you it’ll impact your geckos.

some petstores (or you can buy it online) sell cage cleaning spray that helps breakdown the smell. you can decorate the cage with rocks, either store bought or out of your yard. just make sure you boil or bake the rocks. you can also buy small reptisafe cactuses from petstores.

yes. you need calcium with d3 for dusting, and a small dish of pure calcium (no d3) for the cage.

they drink the water, even if you don’t see them doing it. these guys are nocturnal so they’re probably doing it while you’re sleeping.

Sand doesn’t cut down on the smell, if anything it’s worse. I use paper towel for my cages, and just doubled up the paper towel on the side of the cage they poop on, and change it everytime they go. I didn’t like reptile carpet for the fact, it does smell if you don’t scrub/wash the heck out of it and they get their nails caught on it. I would use fake plants, and they love rocks and driftwood too climb on. My geckos love climbing on top of their humid hides lol I use reptivite, two times a week, and pure jurrasi-cal the rest of the time and have a dish of the pure calcium in the cage. I’ve only seen mine drink water a few times. But they do, it’s really cute..lol I know that sounds weird but it is lol Also keep the humid hide sprayed down really good cause they like to lick water off the sides of it.

I use paper towels, viva, cause they’re softer lol But you can use any unprinted paper towels. Or you can use Slate or texture ceramic tile. And yes, that’s a humid hide. I use coconut fiber for mine but alot of people do use paper towels or moss. Why we say use a dish of pure calcium is because they will lick out of the bowl(or lid or whatever you want to put the pure calcium in.) and get the extra calcium they need. We use pure/plain calcium because D3 can be toxic if they get too much, that’s why I only use it twice a week, and gut load my feeders with something that has D3 in it.

I went and bought a bunch of stuff to make the tank look nicer. We got them a big pond bowl that they can actually cover their bodies with water and I put rocks around it for decoration. It looks so nice now. I asked the lady at the pet store about the stuff I have that is a gutt loader and she said since it has the calcium in it I can use that. Now I need to add some wet moss for them. I put in the crickets but they arent going after them yet. Thanks for the advice everyone :)

Be careful about adding wet moss just open in the tank. They are desert lizards and humidity should not be over 50%. I use a gladware or babywipe container or anything like that and cut a hole in the front, and put the bedding in there and mist it daily. Honestly, not trying to put anyone down but, I don’t trust anyone who works at a petstore because most of them know nothing, and haven’t even bothered to research beyond the care sheets they have. I, like most of the people here strive to find more and more information too keep our herps happy and healthy in their environment. I’ve been keeping reptiles for about four years now, and am constantly reading/talking to people who have been keeping herps as long as Ive been alive and comparing information/learning from experience. While people at the pet store and just working there, because they have too.
