 PLEASE HELP

My son had a loepard gecko for four years. We rescued her at about one year of age. Unfortunately, last Saturday she died. The vet said that some internal organ burst, like an aneurysm or something, and I couldn’t stop the bleeding. my son did get to hold her till the end and we are making a memory book. He is 12 and was very sad, especially since it was his first pet and we thought they lived like 20 years. So I really have two questions. First of all has anyone heard of something similar happening to their gecko. How long do they really live? I guess my third question is what should we get him now as a pet? He’s not sure if he wants another leo or not. We already have a beardie, turtle and B.T. skink. He was wondering about a day gecko. I’ve tried to research other geckos and keep coming back to leos. He wants something that he can hold on occasion and has some personality. Any suggestions?

they can live a long time. stubb is about 22 and gekk is 13.. stuff just happens sometimes.
if he doesnt want another leo i advise against a day gecko since they can be very fragile.. if you want to stick with easy geckos try an african fat tailed gecko or a crested gecko.. if you dont mid some noise whites tree frogs are a good introduction to amphibians.

Thanks for the input. I hope he wants another leo because I think they are sweet. I worried about a day gecko, too, that they aren’t that social. They had crested geckos at the pet store, but were very jumpy-I could hardly hold on to the one. Looked pretty and it was kind of cool how one could catch my finger with its tail. Well, I worry about them dropping their tail-do you know if the tail is more fragile than a leo? We never had any trouble with her tail. African fat tails are pretty, but tend to bite more. I know that my son, Ben, got bit by the one they had at his school and it really hurt. He actually dropped the gecko on the floor(wasn’t far to the floor) and I scooped it up.

most of it is socializing for all gecko species. i have four afts and have only been bitten once, boomer crawled behind a drawer and i had to pull it out of its hinges to get to him.. he bit a hunk out of my finger in thanks. but he was so scared.. he was screaming and hissing and telling me he was not happy that i made a lot of noise ripping thr drawer out. lol.
ive never been bitten by my other three.. my females seem to be a lot mellower than my male.
cresties are A LOT of fun i have a pair of females. they are active but once they get used to being handled they wont run from you.. their tails are a little more fragile than a leos.. but mine hang off my finger with them all the time.. they can drop theirs due to extreme stress.. so if you get one take it slow.. but theyre great little geckos.. plus their tans are so much fun to decorate.. i have one of those big front opening tanks for mine.. plus you can put some live plants in them.. lots of fun. lol.. if you want a climbing gecko i suggest them.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask! lol

yeah id say crestie or AFT.

AFTs are pretty mellow. i have one and havent been bitten by her.. she likes to curl up on my moms lap and fall asleep under her hands..

cresties are jumpy at first but they do calm down alot after they get to know you and get a bit older.. some dont calm down but alot is due to the frequency that you hold them. i have 15 now since i just sold 3.. i have ones that spazz like madd at first but calm down fairly quickly and i have others that are calm as can be. heck my favorite girl that i hatched will chill on my shoulder most of the time when i have her out and she never tries to get away. but she was also a baby i hatched and hand fed for a good 2 months after she hatched just to make sure they at least ate a bit of food since i could never tell if they had eaten out of the dishes or not

So this is the lovely crested gecko that my 12 y/o son fell in love with. Supposed to be 5-6 months old. Maybe a female. A little shy yet and jumpy. Have her in a 30 gallon and trying to keep the heat down . This is a new experience for us since we’re used to desert animals. Let us know what you think.

So why don’t you get one? This one was 49.95 at Petco. I checked it out thoroughly-had all its toes, no tail damage, good clear eyes, very active and a larger one than the others which means it has been eating. I am real careful when I go to pet stores to make sure nothing appears wrong.

I was going to suggest getting a Super Snow leo. I have one who’s super tame...very laid back and doesn’t mind being held. She came to me like this...I did nothing as far as "training" to get her to be tame. A breeder here said Super Snows are known for being tame and mellow. In case you don’t know what a Super Snow looks like, I’ll show you mine...they all pretty much look like mine...they cost around $100 from a breeder.
