Mealworm shortage 
Has anyone else heard about this? I went to a pet store last Friday and they only had mini-mealworms and giant mealworms in their fridge. I asked one of the employees if they had any regular sized ones in the back because I have 2 totally differently sized leos. She told me that that was all that they had because there is a major shortage of mealworms going on. She said that most stores get them from the same supplier and aren’t expecting any for at least a few weeks. Has anyone else had trouble getting any? I’m in the Chicago area.

i have had problems getting them as well here in Florida. there stock of meal and super worms aren’t to good down here. guess we will all be using crickets for a few weeks. i was wondering why that was.

Yes there is a shortage of mealworms nationwide. I heard it was some kind of disease that killed a lot of the worms off but i am not 100% about that. At least mealworms aren’t the only thing geckos eat, or we would be in A LOT of trouble lol!

no one anywhere can get live ones.. the farm that supplies 70% of the mealie market has something going through where they get to a certain size and then die off.. from what i hear none of their stock is getting past that size right now. and as far as i know they have yet to figure out what exactally if anything is going through them.. but they are pulling their sources and trying to get back up and going. last i heard about a week ago it will be at least another 2-3 weeks(probably longer than that im figuring) before they are sending out anything. so all we can do is sit and wait
if youre wondering how i know i work for a local pet store and we get our bugs from the bug co. and they have been nice enough to let us know whats going on when we asked

This sucks! I’m going through a tiny phase with my mealies. None are big enough for my leos right now. My dad went to the pet store today to see if they had ANY and apparently a woman came in and bought ALL of the 700+ mealworms they had!!! They shouldn’t allowed to do that what about the other people!
Crickets it is for awhile...

well I hate to say it but, first come, and money talks. I know it is tough going through this but you can’t blame a store for selling thier product. They are in the business to sell and who is to say how many pets this woman needed to feed.
One thing is for sure. I will not let my mealworm supply get as low as I did. And I’ll make sure to keep an extra supply of breeding beetles once this is over.

I bought quite a few that day when I found out about the shortage and most of them died anyways! There are always some dead ones but this went WAY faster than usual!

Yeah, I went to petsmart to buy some mealies for the animal hospital/rescue and so I bought like 50 tubs and a good 60% were dead =(

I talked to the manager of the pet store I go to. He said that his supplier told him it would probably be the end of July before they ship any meal worms. That just sucks. I have probably 10,000 mealies.....all WAY to small to feed any of my leos other than my hatchling. Mine refuse crickets too...the would sooner starve than eat them.

Ok here is the 411 on the mealworm shortage. Two of the major suppliers for mealworms gets there supply of grain/food from China and it was tainted and killed the whole lot of mealworms. They are hoping to have it fixed and the supply back up by August 1st. Got to love China

Yep, I found out about the shortage about a week before on the leopard gecko forum, and then I went to pick up a jar of mealies and there was only one container of small mealworms. I got those, but AT LEAST 60% were mushy, entirely black and dead. I think that’s the problem there. And it really sucks too-yesterday I went to get crickets and they hadn’t gotten their cricket shipment! I bought some supers, but I’ll get crickets on Tues. or Wed. when they finally get some in. All the people in the reptile section were very, very mad (crickets are very popular, I guess)

Ok. If there are sick mealworms & they are dying do you think it is safe to feed these store bought mealworms to our Leo’s? I mean if they have a disease that is killing them I just hope it is not toxic to our Gecko’s or any other reptile.

I just got in 1000 mealies from mulberryfarms. com. They breed their own stock so I have had no problems with any of mine. I love their feeders so much that I buy all my silkies, mealies, and crix from them.

I live in Williamsport, PA next to this tiny store that sells mealies for fishing. They were supposed to get more in this past friday and never did. The owner dosent know why and i saw this post and thought this might be the reason. Is it only in one area or everywhere?

well the mealie farms had some sort of "crop failure" where all the mealies were just dying... but they are slowly getting back their losses. i work at a pet store so its good for me i get first dibbs! lol we are only getting super tiny ones right now though... and only about 1000 at a time where as before it was like 3000
