 Anguis fragilis

Hello there!
I have been feeding my anguis only with slugs,and now i think it’s a bit plump.Really does anybody know how many slugs it should eat?(it’s 35cm long)
Also,it shed it’s skin but some skin in the tail and in the neck hasn’t come off yet.What shoulg i do?

Hello Anguisfan. Has your slow worm still got unshed skin on it? If it has soak it in warm water for 15 minutes or so, hopefully that will soften the skin enough to allow it to come off. I know it sounds obvious, but don’t have the water so deep that it drowns...

If you’re going to release it this is the best time of year - it will have plenty of time to build up fat reserves before hibernation. Find a suitable site (somewhere that already has slow worms if you can) andlet it go by some cover; it’ll be absolutely fine.

Soak him a little longer and see if you can gently roll the skin down his body. Careful he doesn’t drop his tail though.

Feed him as many slugs as you can. He won’t eat crickets or mealworms, but you could try him on small earthworms. Not the red ones you find in compost heaps though, as they can be toxic.

To be honest, I think you should let him go. Problems with shedding are normally caused by something being wrong in the vivarium/environment, if you release him it’ll probably sort itself out.

BTW, as you live in Greece you may not have Anguis fragilis, he could well be A. cephallonica!
