 The difference

How do you tell the differences between wild legless lizards and wild snakes? there is 5 or 6 something in a rock wall at my aunts house in the summer and they come out to drink water she leaves out for them. i picked one up (stupidley enough) a couple years back by the tail and it was a good 2.5-3 feet. it was black with some yellow strikes.

Well, your profile says you’re in ny, which makes it easy. There are no legless lizards anywhere near ny. What you are finding are likely garter snakes (Thamnophis sp.). Legless lizards have an external ear opening, snakes do not.

Cheers,
Nick
