Any info on Italian Wall Lizard (Podarcis sicula campestris)???

Hey,

I’ve recently discovered they’re are only 1 species of lizard where i come from (Long Island, NY)... the Italian Wall Lizard (Podarcis sicula campestris). These were introduced to L.I. from Europe by in 1967. i believe some may of escaped from somewhere and bred.

Suposedly these lizards adapted well here and fit right in. ive read "... abundant locally in specific localities. They thrive in urbanized areas living in and around human debris, rocks and logs."

Very interesting. I think when the spring rolls around im gonna have to go on herp adventure and find some.. not to capture of course not, but to study and see first hand.

Has anyone ever heard of these types of lacertas, wall lizards and such being in the herp trade as pets? Just curious. They seem to only be found in Europe, Eastern LI and Kansas.

Hey, i have. My girlfriend caught 2 of them in the shipping area at here job. We thought they came in a shipment so we took them home. Any pet store we brought them to had no idea what they were. About six months later we found a pet store that that the owners were origonally from italy and told us what they were. We have had them about eight months and there like our kids. If you need any info let me know........

Yup I know all about these little guys. They’re spreading like crazy. I live in the Bronx, and every year or so I find them at a new place. You’ll have to find exactly where some of the Long Island populations are. I’d love to give you pics or caresheets or info or whatever just tell me exactly what you need.

I think my fiance may have just found one of these lizards in our backyard on Long Island. It is a teeny tiny baby. Would it survive if we decided to keep it? What type of food would it eat? Does anyone have any pics of what these lizards look like just so we can be sure?
