 Shedding

My Cali king is shedding now and I want to know would he be OK with a damp substrate hide because I know they snakes don’t need high humidity because it can cause health problems??

They love a humid hide TAk humidity on the 50=60 % range wont hurt for a short shedding week or two... I promise

tea tree oil is really really strong smelling... and possibly caustic

I would bet that it would be detrimental compared to mineral oil or baby oil

Mineral oil is recommended by Vets and baby oil , we use that extensively on our Iguana.

WOW... tea tree oil...Im going to look that up for sure

Cphill58 my apartment gets warm during the day and especially at night idk know if my digital thermometer is reading wrong but my room stays in the mid 80’s even at night and when I turn on my cinnamon bp light it spikes beyond 94°F so can I keep their lights off. Same goes for my Cali king. Funny thing is their not even cold to touch their a nice body temp not too cold not too hot. I bought a different watt bulb(75) it keeps the substrate warm but not hot because I felt it, the cage wall on the hot side is slightly warm too but not hot. Both are active and eats every week and poops. The bp hides all day and comes out at night like a bp would and the Cali just does whatever but he comes out more at night for while then hides.

Tak ...Im in Utah , we expect sold temps and snow every year... the house stays at 74 75 according to the wall thermostat.

However, I use UTH for my kings and corns. The large constrictors get radiant heat panels ... Now there’s lots of little details like is the tank located on an exterior wall ...cold drafts or areas that the heater doesn’t really reach ...a bedroom that might be colder than the living room etc.

I have at least 8 glass tanks and then some other larger wood construction enclosures with sliding glass.

IMO , 94 is way to hot, my Retic and RTB are comfortable at 85 F hot side ...and often roam 6 ft to the cool side
If they want hotter they can get on top of the hide and get closer to the RHP

Can you get a timer ...or a thermostat ... or a lower wattage bulb ?? What wattage bulb are you using

There are so many ways to regulate temps....what about a temp gun from Harbor Freight, surely you have 11.00

Temp Gun

with one of these you can measure any spot in the enclosure.

" we expect COLD temps"....not sold ...lol

TEA TREE OIL

a couple of articles
The problem is when someone pops on here and says ...."oh yeah , just go out and get some tea tree oil"
That leads to the novice possibly using the completely wrong product and possibly doing some serious harm to the reptile.

In one forum they talk a bout a ZOO MED product containing tea tree oil for wounds and cuts and fighting bacteria etc. But that is a special diluted form .001 %

regular tea tree oil as you might see it at the mall for scent pots and other stuff is crazy strong and the following article describes the toxicity
tea tree oil

Dont get anything with CAMPHORS and TERPENES

Thank you so much your the best when I need quick advice. I was using a 100W but switched to a 75W omg call me stupid I was stressed as hell from work and asked the petstore worker for help...really wasn’t into it that day. I will look at petsmart to see about the thermostat and temp guns but if they don’t have it im ordering this week. I felt the substrate but it wasn’t even hot it was slightly warm probably the thermometer but I’ll take your advice and start searching. I was also looking into vision cages or racks since I have quite a number of snakes but can’t get over the fear of a heat mat causing a fire. Guess cause I never used one but then again thank you.

well a thermostats going to be about $30 even for the cheap reptile ones so that could be a problem.
if you had a temp gun like the one I recommended from Harbor Freight you could adjust temperatures with a lamp dimmer have you seen those, it looks like an extension cord with a sliding button on it and they’re about $12 at the Home Depot or the Lowes.
its called a corded lamp dimmer.
it allows you to adjust the amount of electricity going to your lamp and you can dim the lamp higher or lower and control the temperatures that way.
