So are we saying that mine is Pyro Pyro rather than Pyro Woodini or are these two Pyro’s one and the same. I did purchase mine as Pyro Woodini but now left wondering.

I think you will find you mentioned Pyro Pyro first in reply to my first post, which was "gotta love AZ MTNs" i thought you were insinuating that my snake was an Arizona Mountain King (Lampropeltis Pyromelana Pyromelana) or Pyro Pyro for short, rather than L.p. Woodini

I asked a genuine question as i have only started getting into the Pyro’s and the responses i got sort of threw me as to what my snake may truly be. Don’t worry i’ll not be posting on this forum again. Especially when obnoxious pricks like yourself, seem to make a habit of shooting people down when they ask an honest question.

My babies are (Lampropeltis pyromelana) pyromelana & woodini. I think yours’ is, too. What the deal is here is that woodini used to be considered a separate subspecies of pyromelana but not anymore. This is a tad confusing. If your snake’s ancestors came from the exact location of the Huachuca Mountains then it would be woodini, as I understand this.

I am planning to get this book: "Mountain Kings" by Brian Hubbs. This is supposed to be the definitive guide to all the pyros and zonatas.
There has been so much cross breeding and such with the different varieties of these snakes that I think the best approach may be to just enjoy our little snakes for the exquisite creatures they are, and not get in a big hairball over which subspecies, ect.

I think it is that pyro pyro is Sonoran or Arizona Mtn king and woodini is a subtype of that. If you have better information please share with me.
Link
I work with three of the four subspecies, or two of the three subspecies, depending on if you accept woodini as a valid subspecies. Sometimes referred to (Markel) as the Sonoran Mountain Kingsnakes, as a group. There is quite a difference between populations and/or subspecies. My most Northern one would by L. p. pyromelana. They have a tendency towards more bands, narrower white, while the woodini have slightly fewer bands and wider white.
From Bob Applegate.
I think my male looks more woodini than his sister. Whatever they are I think they are the greatest eye candy! Last night I was watching them explore their new homes. The white looked like it had been painted on with a tiny brush. It was entrancing!

according to my information what you just posted is somewhat correct but i’ve other information that says higher and lower band counts can be found in either populations.
hmmmm? maybe that’s why both variations have been rolled into one.
then i’ve also read that a variation of pyro has been found without any red now what sub do you suppose that one is?
taxonomists rarely get classifications right 1st, 2nd or 3rd time and sometimes they never get it right, lol!, that’s why they’re always changing names.

My point exactly! That is why I say we should just enjoy our living jewels, and not get our knickers in a twist over what ’s what. The only really reliable way to sort this would be to go to the specific locations where the various types are found, find some, and take DNA samples. Then that information could be correlated with the huge amount of DNA available in captive populations...this makes my head hurt just thinking of all the work involved.

DNA testing is good but i think it depends on who’s doing the testing.

Beat ya to it! I named my male Woody and my female Dotz, for the dot on her neck.
Now I will always think of Woody Harrelson, one of my all time favorite actors, when I do anything with my snake Woody! He was great in Natural Born Killers and so was Juliette Lewis...oh, no , wandering off topic big time!
